Exodus 19:12

19:12 You must set boundaries ¹  for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed ²  to yourselves not to go up on the mountain nor touch its edge. Whoever touches the mountain will surely be put to death!

Joshua 3:4-5

3:4 But stay about three thousand feet behind it. ³  Keep your distance ⁴  so you can see ⁵  which way you should go, for you have not traveled this way before.”

3:5 Joshua told the people, “Ritually consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will perform miraculous deeds among you.”

[19:12]  ¹ tn The verb is a Hiphil perfect (“make borders”) with vav (ו) consecutive, following the sequence of instructions.

[19:12]  ² tn The Niphal imperative (“guard yourselves, take heed to yourselves”) is followed by two infinitives construct that provide the description of what is to be avoided – going up or touching the mountain.

[3:4]  ³ tn Heb “But there should be a distance between you and it, about two thousand cubits in measurement.”

[3:4]  ⁴ tn Heb “do not approach it.”

[3:4]  ⁵ tn Heb “know.”
