Context18:31 Throw away all your sins you have committed and fashion yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! 1 Why should you die, O house of Israel?
Ezekiel 33:12
Context33:12 “And you, son of man, say to your people, 2 ‘The righteousness of the righteous will not deliver him if he rebels. 3 As for the wicked, his wickedness will not make him stumble if he turns from it. 4 The righteous will not be able to live by his righteousness 5 if he sins.’ 6
Ezekiel 33:1
Context33:1 The word of the Lord came to me:
Ezekiel 7:3-4
Context7:3 The end is now upon you, and I will release my anger against you; I will judge 7 you according to your behavior, 8 I will hold you accountable for 9 all your abominable practices. 7:4 My eye will not pity you; I will not spare 10 you. 11 For I will hold you responsible for your behavior, 12 and you will suffer the consequences of your abominable practices. 13 Then you will know that I am the Lord!
Colossians 3:5-9
Context3:5 So put to death whatever in your nature belongs to the earth: 14 sexual immorality, impurity, shameful passion, 15 evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. 3:6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming on the sons of disobedience. 16 3:7 You also lived your lives 17 in this way at one time, when you used to live among them. 3:8 But now, put off all such things 18 as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth. 3:9 Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old man with its practices
Titus 2:14
Context2:14 He 19 gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, 20 who are eager to do good. 21
James 2:10-12
Context2:10 For the one who obeys the whole law but fails 22 in one point has become guilty of all of it. 23 2:11 For he who said, “Do not commit adultery,” 24 also said, “Do not murder.” 25 Now if you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a violator of the law. 2:12 Speak and act as those who will be judged by a law that gives freedom. 26
[18:31] 1 sn In Ezek 11:19, 36:26 the new heart and new spirit are promised as future blessings.
[33:12] 2 tn Heb “the sons of your people.”
[33:12] 3 tn Heb “in the day of his rebellion.” The statement envisions a godly person rejecting what is good and becoming sinful. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 2:247-48.
[33:12] 4 tn Heb “and the wickedness of the wicked, he will not stumble in it in the day of his turning from his wickedness.”
[33:12] 6 tn Heb “in the day of his sin.”
[7:3] 7 tn Or “punish” (cf. BDB 1047 s.v. שָׁפַט 3.c).
[7:3] 9 tn Heb “I will place on you.”
[7:4] 10 tn The meaning of the Hebrew term is primarily emotional: “to pity,” which in context implies an action, as in being moved by pity in order to spare them from the horror of their punishment.
[7:4] 11 tn The pronoun “you” is not in the Hebrew text, but is implied.
[7:4] 12 tn “I will set your behavior on your head.”
[7:4] 13 tn Heb “and your abominable practices will be among you.”
[3:5] 14 tn Grk “the members which are on the earth.” See BDAG 628 s.v. μέλος 1, “put to death whatever in you is worldly.”
[3:6] 16 tc The words ἐπὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς τῆς ἀπειθείας (epi tou" Juiou" th" apeiqeia", “on the sons of disobedience”) are lacking in Ì46 B b sa, but are found in א A C D F G H I Ψ 075 0278 33 1739 1881 Ï lat sy bo. The words are omitted by several English translations (NASB, NIV, ESV, TNIV). This textual problem is quite difficult to resolve. On the one hand, the parallel account in Eph 5:6 has these words, thus providing scribes a motive for adding them here. On the other hand, the reading without the words may be too hard: The ἐν οἷς (en |oi") of v. 7 seems to have no antecedent without υἱούς already in the text, although it could possibly be construed as neuter referring to the vice list in v. 5. Further, although the witness of B is especially important, there are other places in which B and Ì46 share errant readings of omission. Nevertheless, the strength of the internal evidence against the longer reading is at least sufficient to cause doubt here. The decision to retain the words in the text is less than certain.
[3:7] 17 tn Grk “you also walked.” The verb περιπατέω (peripatew) is commonly used in the NT to refer to behavior or conduct of one’s life (L&N 41.11).
[3:8] 18 tn The Greek article with τὰ πάντα (ta panta) is anaphoric, referring to the previous list of vices, and has been translated here as “all such things.”
[2:14] 19 tn Grk “who” (as a continuation of the previous clause).
[2:14] 20 tn Or “a people who are his very own.”
[2:14] 21 tn Grk “for good works.”
[2:10] 23 tn Grk “guilty of all.”
[2:11] 24 sn A quotation from Exod 20:14 and Deut 5:18.
[2:11] 25 sn A quotation from Exod 20:13 and Deut 5:17.
