Ezekiel 18:8-9

18:8 does not engage in usury or charge interest, ¹  but refrains ²  from wrongdoing, promotes true justice ³  between men, 18:9 and follows my statutes and observes my regulations by carrying them out. ⁴  That man ⁵  is righteous; he will certainly live, ⁶  declares the sovereign Lord.

Ezekiel 18:13

18:13 engages in usury and charges interest. Will he live? He will not! Because he has done all these abominable deeds he will certainly die. ⁷  He will bear the responsibility for his own death. ⁸ 

Leviticus 18:4

18:4 You must observe my regulations ⁹  and you must be sure to walk in my statutes. ¹⁰  I am the Lord your God.

Leviticus 18:26

18:26 You yourselves must obey ¹¹  my statutes and my regulations and must not do any of these abominations, both the native citizen and the resident foreigner in your midst, ¹² 

Leviticus 18:30

18:30 You must obey my charge to not practice any of the abominable statutes ¹³  that have been done before you, so that you do not ¹⁴  defile yourselves by them. I am the Lord your God.’”

[18:8]  ² tn Heb, “turns back his hand.”

[18:8]  ³ tn Heb “justice of truth.”

[18:9]  ⁴ tc The MT reads לַעֲשׂוֹת אֱמֶת (la’asot ’emet, “to do with integrity”), while the LXX reads “to do them,” presupposing לַעֲשׂוֹת אֹתָם (la’asot ’otam). The ם (mem) and ת (tav) have been reversed in the MT. The LXX refelcts the original, supported by similar phrasing in Ezekiel 11:20; 20:19.

[18:9]  ⁵ tn Heb “he.”

[18:9]  ⁶ tn Heb “living, he will live.” The infinitive absolute precedes the finite verb for emphasis.

[18:13]  ⁷ tn Heb “be put to death.” The translation follows an alternative reading that appears in several ancient textual witnesses.

[18:13]  ⁸ tn Heb “his blood will be upon him.”

[18:4]  ⁹ tn Heb “My regulations you shall do”; KJV, NASB “my judgments”; NRSV “My ordinances”; NIV, TEV “my laws.”

[18:4]  ¹⁰ tn Heb “and my statutes you shall keep [or “watch; guard”] to walk in them.”

[18:26]  ¹¹ tn Heb “And you shall keep, you.” The latter emphatic personal pronoun “you” is left out of a few medieval Hebrew mss, Smr, the LXX, Syriac, and Vulgate.

[18:26]  ¹² tn Heb “the native and the sojourner”; NIV “The native-born and the aliens”; NAB “whether natives or resident aliens.”

[18:30]  ¹³ tn Heb “to not do from the statutes of the detestable acts.”

[18:30]  ¹⁴ tn Heb “and you will not.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative force here.
