28:22 Say, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says:

“‘Look, I am against you, 1  Sidon,

and I will magnify myself in your midst.

Then they will know that I am the Lord

when I execute judgments on her

and reveal my sovereign power 2  in her.

28:23 I will send a plague into the city 3  and bloodshed into its streets;

the slain will fall within it, by the sword that attacks it 4  from every side.

Then they will know that I am the Lord.

Ezekiel 32:30

Context

32:30 “All the leaders of the north are there, along with all the Sidonians; despite their might they have gone down in shameful terror with the dead. They lie uncircumcised with those killed by the sword, and bear their shame with those who descend to the pit.

Joel 3:4-8

Context

3:4 Why are you doing these things to me, Tyre and Sidon? 5

Are you trying to get even with me, land of Philistia? 6

I will very quickly repay you for what you have done! 7

3:5 For you took my silver and my gold

and brought my precious valuables to your own palaces. 8

3:6 You sold Judeans and Jerusalemites to the Greeks,

removing them far from their own country. 9

3:7 Look! I am rousing them from that place to which you sold them.

I will repay you for what you have done! 10

3:8 I will sell your sons and daughters to 11  the people of Judah. 12

They will sell them to the Sabeans, 13  a nation far away.

Indeed, the Lord has spoken!

[28:22]  1 tn Or “I challenge you.” The phrase “I am against you” may be a formula for challenging someone to combat or a duel. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 1:201-2, and P. Humbert, “Die Herausforderungsformel ‘h!nn#n' ?l?K>,’” ZAW 45 (1933): 101-8.

[28:22]  2 tn Or “reveal my holiness.” God’s “holiness” is fundamentally his transcendence as sovereign ruler of the world. The revelation of his authority and power through judgment is in view in this context.

[28:23]  3 tn Heb “into it”; the referent of the feminine pronoun has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[28:23]  4 tn Heb “by a sword against it.”

[3:4]  5 tn Heb “What [are] you [doing] to me, O Tyre and Sidon?”

[3:4]  6 tn Or “districts.”

[3:4]  7 tn Heb “quickly, speedily, I will return your recompense on your head.” This is an idiom for retributive justice and an equitable reversal of situation.

[3:5]  8 tn Or perhaps, “temples.”

[3:6]  9 tn Heb “border.”

[3:7]  10 tn Heb “I will return your recompense on your head.”

[3:8]  11 tn Heb “into the hand of.”

[3:8]  12 tn Heb “the sons of Judah.”

[3:8]  13 sn The Sabeans were Arabian merchants who were influential along the ancient caravan routes that traveled through Arabia. See also Job 1:15; Isa 43:3; 45:14; Ps 72:10.
