Genesis 18:7-8

18:7 Then Abraham ran to the herd and chose a fine, tender calf, and gave it to a servant, ¹  who quickly prepared it. ²  18:8 Abraham ³  then took some curds and milk, along with the calf that had been prepared, and placed the food ⁴  before them. They ate while ⁵  he was standing near them under a tree.

15:23 Bring ⁶  the fattened calf ⁷  and kill it! Let us eat ⁸  and celebrate,

[18:7]  ² tn The construction uses the Piel preterite, “he hurried,” followed by the infinitive construct; the two probably form a verbal hendiadys: “he quickly prepared.”

[18:8]  ³ tn Heb “he”; the referent (Abraham) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[18:8]  ⁴ tn The words “the food” are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons. In the Hebrew text the verb has no stated object.

[18:8]  ⁵ tn The disjunctive clause is a temporal circumstantial clause subordinate to the main verb.

[15:23]  ⁶ tn Grk “And bring.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[15:23]  ⁷ tn Or “the prize calf” (L&N 65.8). See also L&N 44.2, “grain-fattened.” Such a calf was usually reserved for religious celebrations.

[15:23]  ⁸ tn The participle φαγόντες (fagontes) has been translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.
