Genesis 24:60

24:60 They blessed Rebekah with these words: ¹ 

“Our sister, may you become the mother ²  of thousands of ten thousands!

May your descendants possess the strongholds ³  of their enemies.”

Deuteronomy 1:10

1:10 The Lord your God has increased your population ⁴  to the point that you are now as numerous as the very stars of the sky. ⁵

[24:60]  ² tn Heb “become thousands of ten thousands.”

[24:60]  ³ tn Heb “gate,” which here stands for a walled city. In an ancient Near Eastern city the gate complex was the main area of defense (hence the translation “stronghold”). A similar phrase occurs in Gen 22:17.

[1:10]  ⁴ tn Heb “multiplied you.”

[1:10]  ⁵ tn Or “heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.
