38:13 Tamar was told, ¹  “Look, your father-in-law is going up ²  to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

38:2 There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man ³  named Shua. ⁴  Judah acquired her as a wife ⁵  and had marital relations with her. ⁶

Abram’s Solution to the Strife

13:1 So Abram went up from Egypt into the Negev. ⁷  He took his wife and all his possessions with him, as well as Lot. ⁸

[38:13]  ² tn The active participle indicates the action was in progress or about to begin.

[38:2]  ³ tn Heb “a man, a Canaanite.”

[38:2]  ⁴ tn Heb “and his name was Shua.”

[38:2]  ⁵ tn Heb “and he took her.”

[38:2]  ⁶ tn Heb “and he went to her.” This expression is a euphemism for sexual intercourse.

[13:1]  ⁷ tn Or “the South [country]” (also in v. 3).

[13:1]  ⁸ tn Heb “And Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all which was his, and Lot with him, to the Negev.”
