Genesis 47:29
Context47:29 The time 1 for Israel to die approached, so he called for his son Joseph and said to him, “If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh 2 and show me kindness and faithfulness. 3 Do not bury me in Egypt,
Deuteronomy 31:14
Context31:14 Then the Lord said to Moses, “The day of your death is near. Summon Joshua and present yourselves in the tent 4 of meeting 5 so that I can commission him.” 6 So Moses and Joshua presented themselves in the tent of meeting.
Deuteronomy 33:1-2
Context33:1 This is the blessing Moses the man of God pronounced upon the Israelites before his death. 33:2 He said:
The Lord came from Sinai
and revealed himself 7 to Israel 8 from Seir.
He appeared in splendor 9 from Mount Paran,
and came forth with ten thousand holy ones. 10
With his right hand he gave a fiery law 11 to them.
Deuteronomy 4:6
Context4:6 So be sure to do them, because this will testify of your wise understanding 12 to the people who will learn of all these statutes and say, “Indeed, this great nation is a very wise 13 people.”
Deuteronomy 4:2
Context4:2 Do not add a thing to what I command you nor subtract from it, so that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God that I am delivering to 14 you.
Deuteronomy 1:13-15
Context1:13 Select wise and practical 15 men, those known among your tribes, whom I may appoint as your leaders.” 1:14 You replied to me that what I had said to you was good. 1:15 So I chose 16 as your tribal leaders wise and well-known men, placing them over you as administrators of groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, and also as other tribal officials.
[47:29] 2 sn On the expression put your hand under my thigh see Gen 24:2.
[47:29] 3 tn Or “deal with me in faithful love.”
[31:14] 4 tc The LXX reads “by the door of the tent” in line with v. 10 but also, perhaps, as a reflection of its tendency to avoid over-familiarity with Yahweh and his transcendence.
[31:14] 5 tn Heb “tent of assembly” (מוֹעֵד אֹהֶל, ’ohel mo’ed); this is not always the same as the tabernacle, which is usually called מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan, “dwelling-place”), a reference to its being invested with God’s presence. The “tent of meeting” was erected earlier than the tabernacle and was the place where Yahweh occasionally appeared, especially to Moses (cf. Exod 18:7-16; 33:7-11; Num 11:16, 24, 26; 12:4).
[31:14] 6 tn Heb “I will command him.”
[33:2] 7 tn Or “rose like the sun” (NCV, TEV).
[33:2] 8 tc Heb “to him.” The LXX reads “to us” (לָנוּ [lanu] for לָמוֹ [lamo]), the reading of the MT is acceptable since it no doubt has in mind Israel as a collective singular.
[33:2] 9 tn Or “he shone forth” (NAB, NIV, NRSV, NLT).
[33:2] 10 tc With slight alteration (מִמְרִבַת קָדֵשׁ [mimrivat qadesh] for the MT’s מֵרִבְבֹת קֹדֶשׁ [merivvot qodesh]) the translation would be “from Meribah Kadesh” (cf. NAB, NLT; see Deut 32:51). However, the language of holy war in the immediate context favors the reading of the MT, which views the Lord as accompanied by angelic hosts.
[33:2] 11 tc The mispointed Hebrew term אֵשְׁדָּת (’eshdat) should perhaps be construed as אֵשְׁהַת (’eshhat) with Smr.
[4:6] 12 tn Heb “it is wisdom and understanding.”
[4:6] 13 tn Heb “wise and understanding.”
[1:13] 15 tn The Hebrew verb נְבֹנִים (nÿvonim, from בִּין [bin]) is a Niphal referring to skill or intelligence (see T. Fretheim, NIDOTTE 1:652-53).
