Genesis 18:27

18:27 Then Abraham asked, “Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord ¹  (although I am but dust and ashes), ²

Genesis 41:16

41:16 Joseph replied to Pharaoh, “It is not within my power, ⁴  but God will speak concerning ⁵  the welfare of Pharaoh.” ⁶ 

[18:27]  ¹ tn The Hebrew term translated “Lord” here and in vv. 30, 31, 32 is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).

[18:27]  ² tn The disjunctive clause is a concessive clause here, drawing out the humility as a contrast to the Lord.

[40:18]  ³ tn Heb “the three baskets [are].”

[41:16]  ⁵ tn Heb “not within me.”

[41:16]  ⁶ tn Heb “God will answer.”

[41:16]  ⁷ tn The expression שְׁלוֹם פַּרְעֹה (shÿlom par’oh) is here rendered “the welfare of Pharaoh” because the dream will be about life in his land. Some interpret it to mean an answer of “peace” – one that will calm his heart, or give him the answer that he desires (cf. NIV, NRSV, NLT).
