[46:26]  1 tn Heb “All the people who went with Jacob to Egypt, the ones who came out of his body, apart from the wives of the sons of Jacob, all the people were sixty-six.”

[19:25]  2 tn Or “and all the plain”; Heb “and all the circle,” referring to the “circle” or oval area of the Jordan Valley.

[19:25]  3 tn Heb “and the vegetation of the ground.”

[17:12]  3 tn Heb “the son of eight days.”

[23:17]  4 tn Heb “And it was conveyed.” The recipient, Abraham (mentioned in the Hebrew text at the beginning of v. 18) has been placed here in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[10:21]  5 tn Heb “And to Shem was born.”

[10:21]  6 tn Or “whose older brother was Japheth.” Some translations render Japheth as the older brother, understanding the adjective הַגָּדוֹל (haggadol, “older”) as modifying Japheth. However, in Hebrew when a masculine singular definite attributive adjective follows the sequence masculine singular construct noun + proper name, the adjective invariably modifies the noun in construct, not the proper name. Such is the case here. See Deut 11:7; Judg 1:13; 2:7; 3:9; 9:5; 2 Kgs 15:35; 2 Chr 27:3; Neh 3:30; Jer 13:9; 36:10; Ezek 10:19; 11:1.

[34:29]  6 tn Heb “they took captive and they plundered,” that is, “they captured as plunder.”

[7:21]  7 tn Heb “flesh.”

[19:3]  8 tn The Hebrew verb פָּצַר (patsar, “to press, to insist”) ironically foreshadows the hostile actions of the men of the city (see v. 9, where the verb also appears). The repetition of the word serves to contrast Lot to his world.

[46:27]  9 tn The LXX reads “nine sons,” probably counting the grandsons of Joseph born to Ephraim and Manasseh (cf. 1 Chr 7:14-20).

[46:27]  10 tn Heb “And the sons of Joseph who were born to him in Egypt were two people; all the people belonging to the house of Jacob who came to Egypt were seventy.”

[6:7]  10 tn The text simply has “from man to beast, to creatures, and to birds of the air.” The use of the prepositions עַדמִן (min...ad) stresses the extent of the judgment in creation.

[8:17]  11 tn The words “bring out” are not in the Hebrew text, but are supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[8:17]  12 tn Following the Hiphil imperative, “bring out,” the three perfect verb forms with vav (ו) consecutive carry an imperatival nuance. For a discussion of the Hebrew construction here and the difficulty of translating it into English, see S. R. Driver, A Treatise on the Use of the Tenses in Hebrew, 124-25.

[8:17]  13 tn Heb “and let them swarm in the earth and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.”

[9:10]  12 tn The verbal repetition is apparently for emphasis.

[47:24]  13 tn The words “the crop” have been supplied in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[47:24]  14 tn The perfect form with the vav (ו) consecutive is equivalent to an imperfect of instruction here.

[47:24]  15 tn Heb “four parts.”

[7:23]  14 tn Heb “and he”; the referent (the Lord) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[7:23]  15 tn Heb “wiped away” (cf. NRSV “blotted out”).

[7:23]  16 tn Heb “from man to animal to creeping thing and to the bird of the sky.”

[7:23]  17 tn The Hebrew verb שָׁאָר (shaar) means “to be left over; to survive” in the Niphal verb stem. It is the word used in later biblical texts for the remnant that escapes judgment. See G. F. Hasel, “Semantic Values of Derivatives of the Hebrew Root r,” AUSS 11 (1973): 152-69.
