[5:5]  1 tn Heb “all the days of Adam which he lived”

[5:5]  2 sn The genealogy traces the line from Adam to Noah and forms a bridge between the earlier accounts and the flood story. Its constant theme of the reign of death in the human race is broken once with the account of Enoch, but the genealogy ends with hope for the future through Noah. See further G. F. Hasel, “The Genealogies of Gen. 5 and 11 and their Alleged Babylonian Background,” AUSS 16 (1978): 361-74; idem, “Genesis 5 and 11,” Origins 7 (1980): 23-37.

[11:32]  3 tn Heb “And the days of Terah were.”

[11:32]  4 tn Heb “Terah”; the pronoun has been substituted for the proper name in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[23:1]  5 tn Heb “And the years of Sarah were one hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of the life of Sarah.”

[29:20]  7 tn Heb “in exchange for Rachel.”

[29:20]  8 sn But they seemed like only a few days to him. This need not mean that the time passed quickly. More likely it means that the price seemed insignificant when compared to what he was getting in the bargain.

[29:20]  9 tn Heb “because of his love for her.” The words “was so great” are supplied for stylistic reasons.

[40:4]  9 sn He served them. This is the same Hebrew verb, meaning “to serve as a personal attendant,” that was translated “became [his] servant” in 39:4.

[40:4]  10 tn Heb “they were days in custody.”
