25:8 he will swallow up death permanently. ¹ 

The sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from every face,

and remove his people’s disgrace from all the earth.

Isaiah 60:20

60:20 Your sun will no longer set;

your moon will not disappear; ³ 

the Lord will be your permanent source of light;

Isaiah 65:19

65:19 Jerusalem will bring me joy,

Revelation 7:17

Revelation 21:1

A New Heaven and a New Earth

21:1 Then ⁷  I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and earth had ceased to exist, ⁸  and the sea existed no more.

Revelation 21:4

21:4 He ⁹  will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death will not exist any more – or mourning, or crying, or pain, for the former things have ceased to exist.” ¹⁰ 

Revelation 22:3

22:3 And there will no longer be any curse, ¹¹  and the throne of God and the Lamb will be in the city. ¹²  His ¹³  servants ¹⁴  will worship ¹⁵  him,

[25:8]  ¹ sn The image of the Lord “swallowing” death would be especially powerful, for death was viewed in Canaanite mythology and culture as a hungry enemy that swallows its victims. See the note at 5:14.

[60:20]  ³ sn In this verse “sun” and “moon” refer to the Lord’s light, which will replace the sun and moon (see v. 19). Light here symbolizes the restoration of divine blessing and prosperity in conjunction with the Lord’s presence. See 30:26.
