Isaiah 27:11
Context27:11 When its branches get brittle, 1 they break;
women come and use them for kindling. 2
For these people lack understanding, 3
therefore the one who made them has no compassion on them;
the one who formed them has no mercy on them.
Luke 16:25-26
Context16:25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, 4 remember that in your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus likewise bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in anguish. 5 16:26 Besides all this, 6 a great chasm 7 has been fixed between us, 8 so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’
[27:11] 1 tn Heb “are dry” (so NASB, NIV, NRSV).
[27:11] 2 tn Heb “women come [and] light it.” The city is likened to a dead tree with dried up branches that is only good for firewood.
[27:11] 3 tn Heb “for not a people of understanding [is] he.”
[16:25] 4 tn The Greek term here is τέκνον (teknon), which could be understood as a term of endearment.
[16:25] 5 tn Or “in terrible pain” (L&N 24.92). Here is the reversal Jesus mentioned in Luke 6:20-26.
[16:26] 6 tn Grk “And in all these things.” There is no way Lazarus could carry out this request even if divine justice were not involved.
[16:26] 7 sn The great chasm between heaven and hell is impassable forever. The rich man’s former status meant nothing now.
