Jeremiah 2:26-27

Context

2:26 Just as a thief has to suffer dishonor when he is caught,

so the people of Israel 1  will suffer dishonor for what they have done. 2

So will their kings and officials,

their priests and their prophets.

2:27 They say to a wooden idol, 3  ‘You are my father.’

They say to a stone image, ‘You gave birth to me.’ 4

Yes, they have turned away from me instead of turning to me. 5

Yet when they are in trouble, they say, ‘Come and save us!’

Psalms 97:7

Context

97:7 All who worship idols are ashamed,

those who boast about worthless idols.

All the gods bow down before him. 6

Isaiah 45:16-17

Context

45:16 They will all be ashamed and embarrassed;

those who fashion idols will all be humiliated. 7

45:17 Israel will be delivered once and for all by the Lord; 8

you will never again be ashamed or humiliated. 9

Isaiah 65:11-14

Context

65:11 But as for you who abandon the Lord

and forget about worshiping at 10  my holy mountain,

who prepare a feast for the god called ‘Fortune,’ 11

and fill up wine jugs for the god called ‘Destiny’ 12

65:12 I predestine you to die by the sword, 13

all of you will kneel down at the slaughtering block, 14

because I called to you, and you did not respond,

I spoke and you did not listen.

You did evil before me; 15

you chose to do what displeases me.”

65:13 So this is what the sovereign Lord says:

“Look, my servants will eat, but you will be hungry!

Look, my servants will drink, but you will be thirsty!

Look, my servants will rejoice, but you will be humiliated!

65:14 Look, my servants will shout for joy as happiness fills their hearts! 16

But you will cry out as sorrow fills your hearts; 17

you will wail because your spirits will be crushed. 18

Isaiah 66:5

Context

66:5 Hear the word of the Lord,

you who respect what he has to say! 19

Your countrymen, 20  who hate you

and exclude you, supposedly for the sake of my name,

say, “May the Lord be glorified,

then we will witness your joy.” 21

But they will be put to shame.

Ezekiel 16:63

Context
16:63 Then you will remember, be ashamed, and remain silent 22  when I make atonement for all you have done, 23  declares the sovereign Lord.’”

Ezekiel 36:32

Context
36:32 Understand that 24  it is not for your sake I am about to act, declares the sovereign Lord. Be ashamed and embarrassed by your behavior, O house of Israel.

Daniel 12:2

Context

12:2 Many of those who sleep

in the dusty ground will awake –

some to everlasting life,

and others to shame and everlasting abhorrence. 25

[2:26]  1 tn Heb “house of Israel.”

[2:26]  2 tn The words “for what they have done” are implicit in the comparison and are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[2:27]  3 tn Heb “wood…stone…”

[2:27]  4 sn The reference to wood and stone is, of course, a pejorative reference to idols made by human hands. See the next verse where reference is made to “the gods you have made.”

[2:27]  5 tn Heb “they have turned [their] backs to me, not [their] faces.”

[97:7]  6 tn The translation assumes that the prefixed verbal form in the first line is an imperfect (“are ashamed”) and that the ambiguous form in the third line is a perfect (“bow down”) because the psalmist appears to be describing the effect of the Lord’s mighty theophany on those who witness it (see vv. 5, 8). Another option is to take the prefixed form in the first line as a jussive (“let all who worship idols be ashamed”) and the ambiguous form in the third line as an imperative (“All you gods, bow down before him!”; cf. NIV).

[45:16]  7 tn “together they will walk in humiliation, the makers of images.”

[45:17]  8 tn Heb “Israel will be delivered by the Lord [with] a permanent deliverance.”

[45:17]  9 tn Heb “you will not be ashamed and you will not be humiliated for ages of future time.”

[65:11]  10 tn The Hebrew text has simply, “forget.” The words “about worshiping at” are supplied in the translation for clarification.

[65:11]  11 tn The Hebrew has לַגַּד (laggad, “for Gad”), the name of a pagan deity. See HALOT 176 s.v. II גַּד 2.

[65:11]  12 tn The Hebrew has לַמְנִי (lamni, “for Meni”), the name of a pagan deity. See HALOT 602 s.v. מְגִי.

[65:12]  13 tn Heb “I assign you to the sword.” Some emend the Qal verb form מָנִיתִי (maniti, “I assign”) to the Piel מִנִּיתִי (minniti, “ I ordain”). The verb sounds like the name of the god Meni (מְנִי, mÿni, “Destiny, Fate”). The sound play draws attention to the irony of the statement. The sinners among God’s people worship the god Meni, apparently in an effort to ensure a bright destiny for themselves. But the Lord is the one who really determines their destiny and he has decreed their demise.

[65:12]  14 tn Or “at the slaughter”; NIV “for the slaughter”; NLT “before the executioner.”

[65:12]  15 tn Heb “that which is evil in my eyes.”

[65:14]  16 tn Heb “from the good of the heart.”

[65:14]  17 tn Heb “from the pain of the heart.”

[65:14]  18 tn Heb “from the breaking of the spirit.”

[66:5]  19 tn Heb “who tremble at his word.”

[66:5]  20 tn Heb “brothers” (so NASB, NIV); NRSV “Your own people”; NLT “Your close relatives.”

[66:5]  21 tn Or “so that we might witness your joy.” The point of this statement is unclear.

[16:63]  22 tn Heb “and your mouth will not be open any longer.”

[16:63]  23 tn Heb “when I make atonement for you for all which you have done.”

[36:32]  24 tn Heb “Let it be known.”

[12:2]  25 sn This verse is the only undisputed reference to a literal resurrection found in the Hebrew Bible.
