Jeremiah 30:14
Context30:14 All your allies have abandoned you. 1
They no longer have any concern for you.
For I have attacked you like an enemy would.
I have chastened you cruelly.
For your wickedness is so great
and your sin is so much. 2
Isaiah 13:18
Context13:18 Their arrows will cut young men to ribbons; 3
they have no compassion on a person’s offspring, 4
they will not 5 look with pity on children.
Isaiah 19:4
Context19:4 I will hand Egypt over to a harsh master;
a powerful king will rule over them,”
says the sovereign master, 6 the Lord who commands armies.
[30:14] 1 tn Heb “forgotten you.”
[30:14] 2 tn Heb “attacked you like…with the chastening of a cruel one because of the greatness of your iniquity [and because] your sins are many.” The sentence has been broken down to conform to contemporary English style and better poetic scansion.
[13:18] 3 tn Heb “and bows cut to bits young men.” “Bows” stands by metonymy for arrows.
[13:18] 4 tn Heb “the fruit of the womb.”
[13:18] 5 tn Heb “their eye does not.” Here “eye” is a metonymy for the whole person.
[19:4] 6 tn The Hebrew term translated “sovereign master” here is אֲדֹנָי (’adonay).
