Jeremiah 8:2

8:2 They will be spread out and exposed to the sun, the moon and the stars. ¹  These are things they ²  adored and served, things to which they paid allegiance, ³  from which they sought guidance, and worshiped. The bones of these people ⁴  will never be regathered and reburied. They will be like manure used to fertilize the ground. ⁵

9:14 Instead they have followed the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts. They have paid allegiance to ⁶  the gods called Baal, ⁷  as their fathers ⁸  taught them to do.

11:1 A wind ¹⁰  lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lord’s temple that faces the east. There, at the entrance of the gate, I noticed twenty-five men. Among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, officials of the people. ¹¹

[8:2]  ¹ tc MT, 4QJer^a and LXX read “the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven,” but 4QJer^c reads “the sun and all the stars.”

[8:2]  ⁴ tn Heb “they will not” but the referent is far enough removed that it might be ambiguous.

[9:14]  ⁷ tn Heb “the Baals,” referring either to the pagan gods called “Baals” or the images of Baal (so NLT).

[9:14]  ⁸ tn Or “forefathers,” or “ancestors.” Here the referent could be the immediate parents or, by their example, more distant ancestors.

[11:21]  ⁹ tn Heb “their way on their head I have placed.”

[11:1]  ¹⁰ tn Or “spirit.” See note on “wind” in 2:2.

[11:1]  ¹¹ sn The phrase officials of the people occurs in Neh 11:1; 1 Chr 21:2; 2 Chr 24:23.

[4:3]  ¹² tn Or “a griddle,” that is, some sort of plate for cooking.
