Job 38:29-30

38:29 From whose womb does the ice emerge,

and the frost from the sky, ¹  who gives birth to it,

38:30 when the waters become hard ²  like stone,

when the surface of the deep is frozen solid?

Psalms 78:47

78:47 He destroyed their vines with hail,

and their sycamore-fig trees with driving rain.

Psalms 147:16-18

147:16 He sends the snow that is white like wool;

he spreads the frost that is white like ashes. ³ 

147:17 He throws his hailstones ⁴  like crumbs.

Who can withstand the cold wind he sends? ⁵ 

147:18 He then orders it all to melt; ⁶ 

he breathes on it, ⁷  and the water flows.

[38:29]  ¹ tn Or “heavens.” The Hebrew term שָׁמַיִם (shamayim) may be translated “heaven(s)” or “sky” depending on the context.

[38:30]  ² tn Several suggest that the verb is not from חָבָא (khava’, “to hide”) but from a homonym, “to congeal.” This may be too difficult to support, however.

[147:16]  ³ tn Heb “the one who gives snow like wool, frost like ashes he scatters.”
