Andrew’s Declaration

1:40 Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said ¹  and followed Jesus. ²

6:8 One of Jesus’ disciples, ³  Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him,

John 12:21-22

12:21 So these approached Philip, ⁴  who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and requested, ⁵  “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” 12:22 Philip went and told Andrew, and they both ⁶  went and told Jesus.

Acts 1:13

1:13 When ⁷  they had entered Jerusalem, ⁸  they went to the upstairs room where they were staying. Peter ⁹  and John, and James, and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James were there. ¹⁰

[1:40]  ² tn Grk “him”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[6:8]  ³ tn Grk “one of his disciples.”

[12:21]  ⁴ sn These Greeks approached Philip, although it is not clear why they did so. Perhaps they identified with his Greek name (although a number of Jews from border areas had Hellenistic names at this period). By see it is clear they meant “speak with,” since anyone could “see” Jesus moving through the crowd. The author does not mention what they wanted to speak with Jesus about.

[12:21]  ⁵ tn Grk “and were asking him, saying.” The participle λέγοντες (legontes) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated here.

[12:22]  ⁶ tn Grk “Andrew and Philip”; because a repetition of the proper names would be redundant in contemporary English style, the phrase “they both” has been substituted in the translation.

[1:13]  ⁷ tn Grk “And when.” Because of the difference between Greek style, which often begins sentences or clauses with “and,” and English style, which generally does not, καί (kai) has not been translated here.

[1:13]  ⁸ tn The word “Jerusalem” is not in the Greek text but is implied (direct objects were often omitted when clear from the context).

[1:13]  ⁹ sn In the various lists of the twelve, Peter (also called Simon) is always mentioned first (see also Matt 10:1-4; Mark 3:16-19; Luke 6:13-16) and the first four are always the same, though not in the same order after Peter.
