12:5 “Why wasn’t this oil sold for three hundred silver coins ¹  and the money ²  given to the poor?”

Acts 20:34-35

20:34 You yourselves know that these hands of mine ³  provided for my needs and the needs of those who were with me. 20:35 By all these things, ⁴  I have shown you that by working in this way we must help ⁵  the weak, ⁶  and remember the words of the Lord Jesus that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” ⁷ 

Galatians 2:10

2:10 They requested ⁸  only that we remember the poor, the very thing I also was eager to do.

Ephesians 4:28

4:28 The one who steals must steal no longer; rather he must labor, doing good with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with the one who has need.

[12:5]  ¹ tn Grk “three hundred denarii.” The denarius was a silver coin worth a standard day’s wage, so the value exceeded what a laborer could earn in a year (taking into account Sabbaths and feast days when no work was done).

[12:5]  ² tn The words “the money” are not in the Greek text, but are implied (as the proceeds from the sale of the perfumed oil).

[20:34]  ³ tn The words “of mine” are not in the Greek text, but are supplied to clarify whose hands Paul is referring to.

[20:35]  ⁴ sn The expression By all these things means “In everything I did.”

[20:35]  ⁵ tn Or “must assist.”

[20:35]  ⁶ tn Or “the sick.” See Eph 4:28.

[20:35]  ⁷ sn The saying is similar to Matt 10:8. Service and generosity should be abundant. Interestingly, these exact words are not found in the gospels. Paul must have known of this saying from some other source.

[2:10]  ⁸ tn Grk “only that we remember the poor”; the words “They requested” have been supplied from the context to make a complete English sentence.
