John 3:18-19

Context
3:18 The one who believes in him is not condemned. 1  The one who does not believe has been condemned 2  already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only 3  Son of God. 3:19 Now this is the basis for judging: 4  that the light has come into the world and people 5  loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil.

John 3:36

Context
3:36 The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects 6  the Son will not see life, but God’s wrath 7  remains 8  on him.

John 8:24

Context
8:24 Thus I told you 9  that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, 10  you will die in your sins.”

John 12:47-48

Context
12:47 If anyone 11  hears my words and does not obey them, 12  I do not judge him. For I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world. 13  12:48 The one who rejects me and does not accept 14  my words has a judge; 15  the word 16  I have spoken will judge him at the last day.

Acts 13:46

Context
13:46 Both Paul and Barnabas replied courageously, 17  “It was necessary to speak the word of God 18  to you first. Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy 19  of eternal life, we 20  are turning to the Gentiles. 21

Acts 13:2

Context
13:2 While they were serving 22  the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart 23  for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

Acts 1:8

Context
1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the farthest parts 24  of the earth.”

Acts 2:12

Context
2:12 All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

Revelation 20:15

Context
20:15 If 25  anyone’s name 26  was not found written in the book of life, that person 27  was thrown into the lake of fire.

Revelation 21:8

Context
21:8 But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, 28  idol worshipers, 29  and all those who lie, their place 30  will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. 31  That 32  is the second death.”

[3:18]  1 tn Grk “judged.”

[3:18]  2 tn Grk “judged.”

[3:18]  3 tn See the note on the term “one and only” in 3:16.

[3:19]  4 tn Or “this is the reason for God judging,” or “this is how judgment works.”

[3:19]  5 tn Grk “and men,” but in a generic sense, referring to people of both genders (as “everyone” in v. 20 makes clear).

[3:36]  6 tn Or “refuses to believe,” or “disobeys.”

[3:36]  7 tn Or “anger because of evil,” or “punishment.”

[3:36]  8 tn Or “resides.”

[8:24]  9 tn Grk “thus I said to you.”

[8:24]  10 tn Grk “unless you believe that I am.” In this context there is an implied predicate nominative (“he”) following the “I am” phrase. What Jesus’ hearers had to acknowledge is that he was who he claimed to be, i.e., the Messiah (cf. 20:31). This view is also reflected in English translations like NIV (“if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be”), NLT (“unless you believe that I am who I say I am”), and CEV (“if you don’t have faith in me for who I am”). For a different view that takes this “I am” and the one in 8:28 as nonpredicated (i.e., absolute), see R. E. Brown, John (AB), 1:533-38. Such a view refers sees the nonpredicated “I am” as a reference to the divine Name revealed in Exod 3:14, and is reflected in English translations like NAB (“if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins”) and TEV (“you will die in your sins if you do not believe that ‘I Am Who I Am’”).

[12:47]  11 tn Grk “And if anyone”; the conjunction καί (kai, “and”) has been left untranslated here for improved English style.

[12:47]  12 tn Or “guard them,” “keep them.”

[12:47]  13 sn Cf. John 3:17.

[12:48]  14 tn Or “does not receive.”

[12:48]  15 tn Grk “has one who judges him.”

[12:48]  16 tn Or “message.”

[13:46]  17 tn Grk “Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out courageously and said.” The redundancy is removed in the translation and the verb “replied” is used in keeping with the logical sequence of events. The theme of boldness reappears: Acts 4:24-30; 9:27-28.

[13:46]  18 tn Grk “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken.” For smoothness and simplicity of English style, the passive construction has been converted to active voice in the translation.

[13:46]  19 tn Or “and consider yourselves unworthy.”

[13:46]  20 tn Grk “behold, we.” In this context ἰδού (idou) is not easily translated into English.

[13:46]  21 sn This turning to the Gentiles would be a shocking rebuke to 1st century Jews who thought they alone were the recipients of the promise.

[13:2]  22 tn This term is frequently used in the LXX of the service performed by priests and Levites in the tabernacle (Exod 28:35, 43; 29:30; 30:20; 35:19; 39:26; Num 1:50; 3:6, 31) and the temple (2 Chr 31:2; 35:3; Joel 1:9, 13; 2:17, and many more examples). According to BDAG 591 s.v. λειτουργέω 1.b it is used “of other expression of religious devotion.” Since the previous verse described the prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch, it is probable that the term here describes two of them (Barnabas and Saul) as they were serving in that capacity. Since they were not in Jerusalem where the temple was located, general religious service is referred to here.

[13:2]  23 tn Or “Appoint.”

[1:8]  24 tn Or “to the ends.”

[20:15]  25 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[20:15]  26 tn The word “name” is not in the Greek text, but is implied.

[20:15]  27 tn Grk “he”; the pronoun has been intensified by translating as “that person.”

[21:8]  28 tn On the term φαρμακεία (farmakeia, “magic spells”) see L&N 53.100: “the use of magic, often involving drugs and the casting of spells upon people – ‘to practice magic, to cast spells upon, to engage in sorcery, magic, sorcery.’ φαρμακεία: ἐν τῇ φαρμακείᾳ σου ἐπλανήθησαν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ‘with your magic spells you deceived all the peoples (of the world)’ Re 18:23.”

[21:8]  29 tn Grk “idolaters.”

[21:8]  30 tn Grk “their share.”

[21:8]  31 tn Traditionally, “brimstone.”

[21:8]  32 tn Grk “sulfur, which is.” The relative pronoun has been translated as “that” to indicate its connection to the previous clause. The nearest logical antecedent is “the lake [that burns with fire and sulfur],” although “lake” (λίμνη, limnh) is feminine gender, while the pronoun “which” (, Jo) is neuter gender. This means that (1) the proper antecedent could be “their place” (Grk “their share,”) agreeing with the relative pronoun in number and gender, or (2) the neuter pronoun still has as its antecedent the feminine noun “lake,” since agreement in gender between pronoun and antecedent was not always maintained, with an explanatory phrase occurring with a neuter pronoun regardless of the case of the antecedent. In favor of the latter explanation is Rev 20:14, where the phrase “the lake of fire” is in apposition to the phrase “the second death.”
