John 4:17-18

4:17 The woman replied, ¹  “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Right you are when you said, ²  ‘I have no husband,’ ³  4:18 for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with ⁴  now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!”

James 2:19

2:19 You believe that God is one; well and good. ⁵  Even the demons believe that – and tremble with fear. ⁶

[4:17]  ² tn Grk “Well have you said.”

[4:17]  ³ tn The word order in Jesus’ reply is reversed from the woman’s original statement. The word “husband” in Jesus’ reply is placed in an emphatic position.

[2:19]  ⁶ tn Grk “believe and tremble.” The words “with fear” are implied.
