John 4:40

4:40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking ¹  him to stay with them. ²  He stayed there two days,

28:30 Paul ³  lived ⁴  there two whole years in his own rented quarters ⁵  and welcomed ⁶  all who came to him, 28:31 proclaiming the kingdom of God and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ ⁷  with complete boldness ⁸  and without restriction. ⁹

3:20 Listen! ¹⁰  I am standing at the door and knocking! If anyone hears my voice and opens the door I will come into his home ¹¹  and share a meal with him, and he with me.

[4:40]  ² tn Because of the length of the Greek sentence and the sequencing with the following verse, the conjunction καί (kai) has not been translated here. Instead a new English sentence is begun.

Hence the transl. at his own expense [NRSV] merits attention) ἐν ἰδίῳ μισθώματι in his own rented lodgings Ac 28:30 (for the idea cp. Jos., Ant. 18, 235).”

[28:31]  ⁷ tn Or “Messiah”; both “Christ” (Greek) and “Messiah” (Hebrew and Aramaic) mean “one who has been anointed.”

[28:31]  ⁹ sn Proclaiming…with complete boldness and without restriction. Once again Paul’s imprisonment is on benevolent terms. The word of God is proclaimed triumphantly and boldly in Rome. Acts ends with this note: Despite all the attempts to stop it, the message goes forth.
