Context14:1 The following is a record of the territory assigned to the Israelites in the land of Canaan by Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the Israelite tribal leaders. 1
Exodus 6:23
Context6:23 Aaron married Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
Exodus 6:25
Context6:25 Now Eleazar son of Aaron married one of the daughters of Putiel and she bore him Phinehas.
These are the heads of the fathers’ households 2 of Levi according to their clans.
Numbers 3:32
Context3:32 Now the head of all the Levitical leaders 3 was Eleazar son of Aaron the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible 4 for the sanctuary.
Numbers 20:26-28
Context20:26 Remove Aaron’s priestly garments 5 and put them on Eleazar his son, and Aaron will be gathered to his ancestors 6 and will die there.”
20:27 So Moses did as the Lord commanded; and they went up Mount Hor in the sight 7 of the whole community. 20:28 And Moses removed Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. So Aaron died there on the top of the mountain. And Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
[14:1] 1 tn Heb “These are [the lands] which the sons of Israel received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes assigned as an inheritance to the sons of Israel.”
[6:25] 2 tn Heb “heads of the fathers” is taken as an abbreviation for the description of “households” in v. 14.
[3:32] 3 tn The Hebrew construction has “the leader of the leaders of” (וּנְשִׂיא נְשִׂיאֵי, unÿsi’ nÿsi’ey).
[3:32] 4 tn Heb “the keepers of the responsibility” (שֹׁמְרֵי מִשְׁמֶרֶת, shomÿrey mishmeret). The participle is a genitive specifying the duty to which he was appointed (thing possessed); its cognate genitive emphasizes that their responsibility was over the holy place.
[20:26] 5 tn The word “priestly” is supplied in the translation for clarity.
[20:26] 6 tn Heb “will be gathered”; this is a truncated form of the usual expression “gathered to his ancestors,” found in v. 24. The phrase “to his ancestors” is supplied in the translation here.
