Lamentations 1:17

Context
The Prophet Speaks:

פ (Pe)

1:17 Zion spread out her hands,

but there is no one to comfort her.

The Lord has issued a decree against Jacob;

his neighbors 1  have become his enemies.

Jerusalem has become

like filthy garbage 2  in their midst. 3

Jeremiah 2:34

Context

2:34 Even your clothes are stained with

the lifeblood of the poor who had not done anything wrong;

you did not catch them breaking into your homes. 4

Yet, in spite of all these things you have done, 5

Jeremiah 13:27

Context

13:27 People of Jerusalem, 6  I have seen your adulterous worship,

your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods. 7

I have seen your disgusting acts of worship 8

on the hills throughout the countryside.

You are doomed to destruction! 9

How long will you continue to be unclean?’”

Ezekiel 24:12-13

Context

24:12 It has tried my patience; 10

yet its thick rot is not removed 11  from it.

Subject its rot to the fire! 12

24:13 You mix uncleanness with obscene conduct. 13

I tried to cleanse you, 14  but you are not clean.

You will not be cleansed from your uncleanness 15

until I have exhausted my anger on you.

[1:17]  1 tn Heb “his neighbors,” which refers to the surrounding nations.

[1:17]  2 tn The noun II נִדָּה (niddah, “unclean thing”) has three basic categories of meaning: (1) biological uncleanness: menstruation of a woman (Lev 12:2, 5; 15:19-33 [9x]; Num 19:9, 13, 20; 31:23; Ezek 18:6; 22:10; 36:17); (2) ceremonial uncleanness: moral impurity and idolatry (Lev 20:21; 2 Chr 29:5; Ezra 9:11; Zech 13:1); and (3) physical uncleanness: filthy garbage (Lam 1:17; Ezek 7:19, 20).

[1:17]  3 tc The MT reads בֵּינֵיהֶם (bÿnehem, “in them” = “in their midst”). The BHS editors suggest that this is a textual corruption for בְּעֵינֵיהֶם (beenehem, “in their eyes” = “in their view”). The ע (ayin) might have dropped out due to orthographic confusion.

[2:34]  4 tn The words “for example” are implicit and are supplied in the translation for clarification. This is only one example of why their death was not legitimate.

[2:34]  5 tn KJV and ASV read this line with 2:34. The ASV makes little sense and the KJV again erroneously reads the archaic second person feminine singular perfect as first person common singular. All the modern English versions and commentaries take this line with 2:35.

[13:27]  6 tn Heb “Jerusalem.” This word has been pulled up from the end of the verse to help make the transition. The words “people of” have been supplied in the translation here to ease the difficulty mentioned earlier of sustaining the personification throughout.

[13:27]  7 tn Heb “[I have seen] your adulteries, your neighings, and your shameless prostitution.” The meanings of the metaphorical references have been incorporated in the translation for the sake of clarity for readers of all backgrounds.

[13:27]  8 tn Heb “your disgusting acts.” This word is almost always used of idolatry or of the idols themselves. See BDB 1055 s.v. שִׁקֻּוּץ and Deut 29:17 and Jer 4:1; 7:30.

[13:27]  9 tn Heb “Woe to you!”

[24:12]  10 tn Heb “(with) toil she has wearied.” The meaning of the statement is unclear in the Hebrew text; some follow the LXX and delete it. The first word in the statement (rendered “toil” in the literal translation above) occurs only here in the OT, and the verb “she has wearied” lacks a stated object. Elsewhere the Hiphil of the verb refers to wearying someone or trying someone’s patience. The feminine subject is apparently the symbolic pot.

[24:12]  11 tn Heb “does not go out.”

[24:12]  12 tn Heb “in fire its rust.” The meaning of the expression is unclear. The translation understands the statement as a command to burn the rust away. See D. I. Block, Ezekiel (NICOT), 1:768.

[24:13]  13 tn Heb “in your uncleanness (is) obscene conduct.”

[24:13]  14 tn Heb “because I cleansed you.” In this context (see especially the very next statement), the statement must refer to divine intention and purpose. Despite God’s efforts to cleanse his people, they resisted him and remained morally impure.

[24:13]  15 tn The Hebrew text adds the word “again.”
