Leviticus 5:8-9

Context
5:8 He must bring them to the priest and present first the one that is for a sin offering. The priest 1  must pinch 2  its head at the nape of its neck, but must not sever the head from the body. 3  5:9 Then he must sprinkle 4  some of the blood of the sin offering on the wall of the altar, and the remainder of the blood 5  must be squeezed out at the base of the altar – it is a sin offering.

10:8 When he says above, “Sacrifices and offerings and whole burnt offerings and sin-offerings you did not desire nor did you take delight in them” 24  (which are offered according to the law), 10:9 then he says, “Here I am: I have come to do your will.” 25  He does away with 26  the first to establish the second. 10:10 By his will 27  we have been made holy through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

[5:8]  1 tn Heb “he.” The subject (“he”) refers to the priest here, not the offerer who presented the birds to the priest (cf. v. 8a).

[5:8]  2 sn The action seems to involve both a twisting action, breaking the neck of the bird and severing its vertebrae, as well as pinching or nipping the skin, but in this case not severing the head from the main body (note the rest of this verse).

[5:8]  3 tn Heb “he shall not divide [it]” (see J. Milgrom, Leviticus [AB], 1:305).

[5:9]  4 tn The Hebrew verb וְהִזָּה (vÿhizzah, Hiphil of נָזָה, nazah) does indeed mean “sprinkle” or “splatter” (cf. Lev 4:6, 17). Contrast “splash” in Lev 1:5, etc. (זָרָק, zaraq).

[5:9]  5 tn Heb “the remainder in the blood.” The Heb. preposition “in” (בְּ, bÿ) is used here to mean “some among” a whole collection of something.

[9:3]  6 tn Heb “a he-goat of goats.”

The MT has the first without and the second with the article.

[15:14]  13 tc The MT has the Qal form of the verb בּוֹא (bo’) “to come” here, but the LXX (followed generally by the Syriac and Tg. Ps.-J.) reflects the Hiphil form of the same verb, “to bring” as in v. 29 below. In v. 29, however, there is no additional clause “and give them to the priest,” so the Hiphil is necessary in that context while it is not necessary here in v. 14.

[10:9]  25 tc The majority of mss, especially the later ones (א2 0278vid 1739 Ï lat), have ὁ θεός (Jo qeo", “God”) at this point, while most of the earliest and best witnesses lack such an explicit addressee (so Ì46 א* A C D K P Ψ 33 1175 1881 2464 al). The longer reading is a palpable corruption, apparently motivated in part by the wording of Ps 40:8 (39:9 LXX) and by the word order of this same verse as quoted in Heb 10:7.

[10:9]  26 tn Or “abolishes.”

[10:10]  27 tn Grk “by which will.” Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.
