Luke 1:58-63

Context
1:58 Her 1  neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown 2  great mercy to her, and they rejoiced 3  with her.

1:59 On 4  the eighth day 5  they came to circumcise the child, and they wanted to name 6  him Zechariah after his father. 1:60 But 7  his mother replied, 8  “No! He must be named 9  John.” 10  1:61 They 11  said to her, “But 12  none of your relatives bears this name.” 13  1:62 So 14  they made signs to the baby’s 15  father, 16  inquiring what he wanted to name his son. 17  1:63 He 18  asked for a writing tablet 19  and wrote, 20  “His name is John.” And they were all amazed. 21

[1:58]  1 tn Grk “And her.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[1:58]  3 tn The verb συνέχαιρον (sunecairon) is an imperfect and could be translated as an ingressive force, “they began to rejoice.”
