Context14:26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate 1 his own father and mother, and wife and children, and brothers and sisters, and even his own life, 2 he cannot be my disciple.

[14:26] 1 tn This figurative use operates on a relative scale. God is to be loved more than family or self.
[14:26] 2 tn Grk “his own soul,” but ψυχή (yuch) is frequently used of one’s physical life. It clearly has that meaning in this context.
[4:17] 3 tn Or “speak no longer.”
[4:18] 5 sn In the name of Jesus. Once again, the “name” reflects the person. The person of Jesus and his authority is the “troubling” topic that, as far as the Jewish leadership is concerned, needs controlling.
[4:19] 6 tn Grk “answered and said to them.”
[4:19] 7 tn Grk “hear,” but the idea of “hear and obey” or simply “obey” is frequently contained in the Greek verb ἀκούω (akouw; see L&N 36.14).
