Luke 1:12

1:12 And Zechariah, visibly shaken when he saw the angel, ¹  was seized with fear. ² 

Mark 6:49-50

6:49 When they saw him walking on the water ³  they thought he was a ghost. They ⁴  cried out, 6:50 for they all saw him and were terrified. But immediately he spoke to them: ⁵  “Have courage! It is I. Do not be afraid.”

Mark 16:5-6

16:5 Then ⁶  as they went into the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe ⁷  sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 16:6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. ⁸  He has been raised! ⁹  He is not here. Look, there is the place where they laid him.

Acts 10:4

10:4 Staring at him and becoming greatly afraid, Cornelius ¹⁰  replied, ¹¹  “What is it, Lord?” The angel ¹²  said to him, “Your prayers and your acts of charity ¹³  have gone up as a memorial ¹⁴  before God.

[1:12]  ¹ tn The words “the angel” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[1:12]  ² tn Or “and he was afraid”; Grk “fear fell upon him.” Fear is common when supernatural agents appear (1:29-30, 65; 2:9; 5:8-10; 9:34; 24:38; Exod 15:16; Judg 6:22-23; 13:6, 22; 2 Sam 6:9).

[6:49]  ³ tn Grk “on the sea,” “on the lake.” The translation “water” has been used here for stylistic reasons (cf. the same phrase in v. 48).

[6:49]  ⁴ tn Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[16:5]  ⁶ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
