Zechariah’s Praise and Prediction

1:67 Then ¹  his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied, ²

[1:67]  ¹ tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.

[1:67]  ² tn Grk “and he prophesied, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant and has not been translated.

[8:54]  ³ tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:54]  ⁴ tn Grk “and called, saying.” This is redundant in contemporary English and has been simplified in the translation to “and said.”

[18:6]  ⁵ sn Listen to what the unrighteous judge says! The point of the parable is that the judge’s lack of compassion was overcome by the widow’s persistence.

[22:57]  ⁷ tn Grk “he denied it, saying.” The referent (Peter) has been specified in the translation for clarity. The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant and has not been translated.

[22:57]  ⁸ sn Woman was a polite form of address (see BDAG 208-9 s.v. γυνή), similar to “Madam” or “Ma’am” used in English in different regions.

[22:57]  ⁹ sn The expression “I do not know him” had an idiomatic use in Jewish ban formulas in the synagogue and could mean, “I have nothing to do with him.”
