Daniel 8:17

My strength drained from 8  me, and my vigor disappeared; 9  I was without energy. 10  10:9 I listened to his voice, 11  and as I did so 12  I fell into a trance-like sleep with my face to the ground.

Daniel 10:12

[6:49]  1 tn Grk “on the sea,” “on the lake.” The translation “water” has been used here for stylistic reasons (cf. the same phrase in v. 48).

[6:49]  2 tn Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

[6:50]  3 tn Grk “he spoke with them, and said to them.”

[8:17]  4 tn Heb “on my face.”

[8:17]  5 tn Or “human one.”

[10:7]  6 tn Heb “the vision.”

[10:7]  7 tn Heb “great trembling fell on them.”

[10:8]  8 tn Heb “did not remain in.”

[10:8]  9 tn Heb “was changed upon me for ruin.”

[10:8]  10 tn Heb “strength.”

[10:9]  11 tc Heb “I heard the sound of his words.” These words are absent in the LXX and the Syriac.

[10:9]  12 tn Heb “as I listened to the sound of his words.”

[10:12]  13 tn Heb “gave your heart.”

[1:12]  14 tn The words “the angel” are not in the Greek text, but are implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

[1:12]  15 tn Or “and he was afraid”; Grk “fear fell upon him.” Fear is common when supernatural agents appear (1:29-30, 65; 2:9; 5:8-10; 9:34; 24:38; Exod 15:16; Judg 6:22-23; 13:6, 22; 2 Sam 6:9).

[1:29]  16 tc Most mss (A C Θ 0130 Ë13 Ï lat sy) have ἰδοῦσα (idousa, “when [she] saw [the angel]”) here as well, making Mary’s concern the appearance of the angel. This construction is harder than the shorter reading since it adds a transitive verb without an explicit object. However, the shorter reading has significant support (א B D L W Ψ Ë1 565 579 1241 sa) and on balance should probably be considered authentic.

[1:29]  17 sn On the phrase greatly troubled see 1:12. Mary’s reaction was like Zechariah’s response.

[1:29]  18 tn Grk “to wonder what kind of greeting this might be.” Luke often uses the optative this way to reveal a figure’s thinking (3:15; 8:9; 18:36; 22:23).

[1:30]  19 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate that Gabriel’s statement is a response to Mary’s perplexity over the greeting.

[1:30]  20 sn Do not be afraid. See 1:13 for a similar statement to Zechariah.

[1:30]  21 tn Or “grace.”
