18:24 As ¹  he began settling his accounts, a man who owed ten thousand talents ²  was brought to him.

12:48 But the one who did not know his master’s will ³  and did things worthy of punishment ⁴  will receive a light beating. ⁵  From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, ⁶  and from the one who has been entrusted with much, ⁷  even more will be asked. ⁸ 

Luke 19:13-14

19:13 And he summoned ten of his slaves, ⁹  gave them ten minas, ¹⁰  and said to them, ‘Do business with these until I come back.’ 19:14 But his citizens ¹¹  hated ¹²  him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man ¹³  to be king ¹⁴  over us!’

[18:24]  ² sn A talent was a huge sum of money, equal to 6,000 denarii. One denarius was the usual day’s wage for a worker. L&N 6.82 states, “a Greek monetary unit (also a unit of weight) with a value which fluctuated, depending upon the particular monetary system which prevailed at a particular period of time (a silver talent was worth approximately six thousand denarii with gold talents worth at least thirty times that much).”

[12:48]  ³ tn Grk “did not know”; the phrase “his master’s will” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were frequently omitted in Greek when clear from the context, but must be supplied for the contemporary English reader.

[12:48]  ⁶ tn Grk “required from him”; but the words “from him” are redundant in English and have not been translated.

[19:14]  ¹¹ tn Or “subjects.” Technically these people were not his subjects yet, but would be upon his return. They were citizens of his country who opposed his appointment as their king; later the newly-appointed king will refer to them as his “enemies” (v. 27).

[19:14]  ¹² tn The imperfect is intense in this context, suggesting an ongoing attitude.

[19:14]  ¹³ tn Grk “this one” (somewhat derogatory in this context).
