Matthew 23:19

Context
23:19 You are blind! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?

Exodus 30:26-29

Context

30:26 “With it you are to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony, 30:27 the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, the altar of incense, 30:28 the altar for the burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its base. 30:29 So you are to sanctify them, 1  and they will be most holy; 2  anything that touches them will be holy. 3

Numbers 16:38-39

Context
16:38 As for the censers of these men who sinned at the cost of their lives, 4  they must be made 5  into hammered sheets for covering the altar, because they presented them before the Lord and sanctified them. They will become a sign to the Israelites.” 16:39 So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers presented by those who had been burned up, and they were hammered out as a covering for the altar.

[30:29]  1 tn The verb is a Piel perfect with vav (ו) consecutive; in this verse it is summarizing or explaining what the anointing has accomplished. This is the effect of the anointing (see Exod 29:36).

[30:29]  2 tn This is the superlative genitive again, Heb “holy of holies.”

[30:29]  3 tn See Exod 29:37; as before, this could refer to anything or anyone touching the sanctified items.

[16:38]  4 tn The expression is “in/by/against their life.” That they sinned against their life means that they brought ruin to themselves.

[16:38]  5 tn The form is the perfect tense with vav (ו) consecutive. But there is no expressed subject for “and they shall make them,” and so it may be treated as a passive (“they shall [must] be made”).
