Matthew 25:45

Context
25:45 Then he will answer them, 4  ‘I tell you the truth, 5  just as you did not do it for one of the least of these, you did not do it for me.’

John 20:17

Romans 8:29

Context
8:29 because those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that his Son 8  would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. 9

Hebrews 2:11-17

Context
2:11 For indeed he who makes holy and those being made holy all have the same origin, 10  and so 11  he is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters, 12  2:12 saying, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers; 13  in the midst of the assembly I will praise you.” 14  2:13 Again he says, 15  “I will be confident in him,” and again, “Here I am, 16  with 17  the children God has given me.” 18  2:14 Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, he likewise shared in 19  their humanity, 20  so that through death he could destroy 21  the one who holds the power of death (that is, the devil), 2:15 and set free those who were held in slavery all their lives by their fear of death. 2:16 For surely his concern is not for angels, but he is concerned for Abraham’s descendants. 2:17 Therefore he had 22  to be made like his brothers and sisters 23  in every respect, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in things relating to God, to make atonement 24  for the sins of the people.

[25:40]  1 tn Grk “answering, the king will say to them.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

[25:40]  2 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[25:40]  3 tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited). In this context Jesus is ultimately speaking of his “followers” (whether men or women, adults or children), but the familial connotation of “brothers and sisters” is also important to retain here.

[25:45]  4 tn Grk “answer them, saying.” The participle λέγων (legwn) is redundant in contemporary English and has not been translated.

[25:45]  5 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

[22:22]  6 tn Or “brothers,” but here the term does not carry a literal familial sense. It refers to the psalmist’s fellow members of the Israelite covenant community (see v. 23).

[20:17]  7 tn Grk “Jesus said to her.”

[8:29]  8 tn Grk “he”; the referent (God’s Son) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[8:29]  9 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:13.

[2:11]  10 tn Grk “are all from one.”

[2:11]  11 tn Grk “for which reason.”

[2:11]  12 tn Grk “brothers,” but the Greek word may be used for “brothers and sisters” as here (cf. BDAG 18 s.v. ἀδελφός 1, where considerable nonbiblical evidence for the plural ἀδελφοί [adelfoi] meaning “brothers and sisters” is cited). The context here also indicates both men and women are in view; note especially the collective τὰ παιδία (ta paidia) in v. 14.

[2:12]  13 tn Here, because of its occurrence in an OT quotation, τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς (tois adelfois) has been translated simply as “brothers” rather than “brothers and sisters” (see the note on the latter phrase in the previous verse).

[2:12]  14 sn A quotation from Ps 22:22.

[2:13]  15 tn Grk “and again,” as a continuation of the preceding.

[2:13]  16 tn Grk “behold, I,” but this construction often means “here is/there is” (cf. BDAG 468 s.v. ἰδού 2).

[2:13]  17 tn Grk “and.”

[2:13]  18 sn A quotation from Isa 8:17-18.

[2:14]  19 tn Or “partook of” (this is a different word than the one in v. 14a).

[2:14]  20 tn Grk “the same.”

[2:14]  21 tn Or “break the power of,” “reduce to nothing.”

[2:17]  22 tn Or “he was obligated.”

[2:17]  23 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 2:11.

[2:17]  24 tn Or “propitiation.”
