Mark 14:17-21
Context14:17 Then, 1 when it was evening, he came to the house 2 with the twelve. 14:18 While they were at the table 3 eating, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, 4 one of you eating with me will betray me.” 5 14:19 They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?” 14:20 He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, one who dips his hand 6 with me into the bowl. 7 14:21 For the Son of Man will go as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would be better for him if he had never been born.”
Luke 22:14-16
Context22:14 Now 8 when the hour came, Jesus 9 took his place at the table 10 and the apostles joined 11 him. 22:15 And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired 12 to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 22:16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again 13 until it is fulfilled 14 in the kingdom of God.” 15
John 13:21
Context13:21 When he had said these things, Jesus was greatly distressed 16 in spirit, and testified, 17 “I tell you the solemn truth, 18 one of you will betray me.” 19
[14:17] 1 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative.
[14:17] 2 tn The prepositional phrase “to the house” is not in the Greek text, but has been supplied for clarity.
[14:18] 3 tn Grk “while they were reclined at the table.”
[14:18] 4 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”
[14:18] 5 tn Or “will hand me over”; Grk “one of you will betray me, the one who eats with me.”
[14:20] 6 tn Grk “one who dips with me.” The phrase “his hand” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.
[14:20] 7 sn One who dips with me in the bowl. The point of Jesus’ comment here is not to identify the specific individual per se, but to indicate that it is one who was close to him – somebody whom no one would suspect. His comment serves to heighten the treachery of Judas’ betrayal.
[22:14] 8 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the transition to a new topic.
[22:14] 9 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
[22:14] 10 tn Grk “reclined at table,” as 1st century middle eastern meals were not eaten while sitting at a table, but while reclining on one’s side on the floor with the head closest to the low table and the feet farthest away.
[22:14] 11 tn Grk “the apostles with him.”
[22:15] 12 tn This phrase parallels a Hebrew infinitive absolute and serves to underline Jesus’ enthusiasm for holding this meal (BDF §198.6).
[22:16] 13 tn Although the word “again” is not in the Greek text, it is supplied to indicate that Jesus did indeed partake of this Passover meal, as statements in v. 18 suggest (“from now on”). For more complete discussion see D. L. Bock, Luke (BECNT), 2:1720.
[22:16] 14 sn Jesus looked to a celebration in the kingdom to come when the Passover is fulfilled. This reference could well suggest that some type of commemorative sacrifice and meal will be celebrated then, as the antecedent is the Passover sacrifice. The reference is not to the Lord’s supper as some argue, but the Passover.
[22:16] 15 sn The kingdom of God here refers to the kingdom in all its power. See Luke 17:20-37.
[13:21] 16 tn Or “greatly troubled.”
[13:21] 17 tn Grk “and testified and said.”
