Your clothing has not worn out 6  nor have your sandals 7  deteriorated. 29:6 You have eaten no bread and drunk no wine or beer – all so that you might know that I 8  am the Lord your God! 29:7 When you came to this place King Sihon of Heshbon and King Og of Bashan came out to make war and we defeated them. 29:8 Then we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to Reuben, Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh.

[12:6]  1 tn Heb “heave offerings of your hand.”

[12:1]  2 tn Heb “fathers.”

[12:1]  3 tn Heb “you must be careful to obey in the land the Lord, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess all the days which you live in the land.” This adverbial statement modifies “to obey,” not “to possess,” so the order in the translation has been rearranged to make this clear.

[29:3]  4 tn Heb “testings.” This is a reference to the plagues; see note at 4:34.

[29:4]  5 tn Heb “a heart to know, eyes to see and ears to hear” (NASB similar); NAB, NRSV “a mind to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear.”

[29:5]  6 tn The Hebrew text includes “on you.” This has not been included in the translation for stylistic reasons.

[29:5]  7 tn The Hebrew text includes “from on your feet.”

[29:6]  8 tc The LXX reads “that he is the Lord your God.”

[29:2]  9 tn The Hebrew text includes “to your eyes,” but this is redundant in English style (cf. the preceding “you have seen”) and is omitted in the translation.

[1:7]  10 tn Heb “turn”; NAB “Leave here”; NIV, TEV “Break camp.”

[1:7]  11 tn Heb “go (to).”

[1:7]  12 tn Heb “its dwelling places.”

[1:7]  13 tn Heb “the Arabah” (so ASV, NAB, NIV, NRSV).

[1:7]  14 tn Heb “lowlands” (so TEV) or “steppes”; NIV, CEV, NLT “the western foothills.”

[1:7]  15 sn The Hebrew term Negev means literally “desert” or “south” (so KJV, ASV). It refers to the area south of Beer Sheba and generally west of the Arabah Valley between the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba.

[1:8]  16 tn Heb “I have placed before you the land.”

[1:8]  17 tn Heb “the Lord.” Since the Lord is speaking, it is preferable for clarity to supply the first person pronoun in the translation.

[1:8]  18 tn Heb “swore” (so NAB, NIV, NRSV, NLT). This refers to God’s promise, made by solemn oath, to give the patriarchs the land.

[1:8]  19 tn Heb “fathers” (also in vv. 11, 21, 35).

[1:8]  20 tn Heb “their seed after them.”

[2:68]  21 tn Heb “the heads of the fathers.”

[2:68]  22 tn Heb “cause it to stand.”

[2:69]  23 tn Heb “according to their strength.”

[2:69]  24 tn The meaning of the Hebrew word דַּרְכְּמוֹנִים (darkÿmonim, cf. Neh 7:69, 70, 71) is uncertain. It may be a Greek loanword meaning “drachmas” (the view adopted here and followed also by NAB, NASB, NIV) or a Persian loanword “daric,” referring to a Persian gold coin (BDB 204 s.v. דַּרְכְּמוֹן; HALOT 232 s.v. נִים(וֹ)דַּרְכְּמֹ; cf. ASV, NRSV). For further study, see R. de Vaux, Ancient Israel, 206-9.

[2:69]  25 sn The מָנִים (manim, cf. Neh 7:71, 72) is a measuring weight for valuable metals, equal to 1/60 of a talent or 60 shekels (BDB 584 s.v. מָנֶה; HALOT 599 s.v. מָנֶה). For further study, see R. de Vaux, Ancient Israel, 203-6.

[2:69]  26 tn Or “garments.”
