18:49 So I will give you thanks before the nations, ¹  O Lord!

Luke 10:21

10:21 On that same occasion ⁸  Jesus ⁹  rejoiced ¹⁰  in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise ¹¹  you, Father, Lord ¹²  of heaven and earth, because ¹³  you have hidden these things from the wise ¹⁴  and intelligent, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will. ¹⁵ 

[18:49]  ¹ sn I will give you thanks before the nations. This probably alludes to the fact that the psalmist will praise the Lord in the presence of the defeated nations when they, as his subjects, bring their tribute payments. Ideally the Davidic king was to testify to the nations of God’s greatness. See J. H. Eaton, Kingship and the Psalms (SBT), 182-85.

[18:49]  ² tn Heb “to your name.” God’s “name” refers metonymically to his divine characteristics as suggested by his name, in this case “Lord,” the primary name of Israel’s covenant God which suggests his active presence with his people (see Exod 3:12-15).

[11:25]  ³ tn Grk “At that time, answering, Jesus said.” This construction is somewhat redundant in English and has been simplified in the translation.

[11:25]  ⁵ sn The title Lord is an important name for God, showing his sovereignty, but it is interesting that it comes next to a reference to the Father, a term indicative of God’s care. The two concepts are often related in the NT; see Eph 1:3-6.
