Context

35:26 May those who want to harm me be totally embarrassed and ashamed! 1

[35:26]  1 tn Heb “may they be embarrassed and ashamed together, the ones who rejoice over my harm.”

[35:26]  2 tn Heb “may they be clothed with shame and humiliation, the ones who magnify [themselves] against me.” The prefixed verbal forms in v. 26 are understood as jussives (see vv. 24b-25, where the negative particle אַל (’al) appears before the prefixed verbal forms, indicating they are jussives). The psalmist is calling down judgment on his enemies.

[38:16]  3 tn Heb “For I said, ‘Lest they rejoice over me.’” The psalmist recalls the motivating argument of his petition. He probably prefaced this statement with a prayer for deliverance (see Pss 7:1-2; 13:3-4; 28:1).

[38:16]  4 tn Heb “they will magnify against me.” See Pss 35:26; 55:13.

[41:11]  5 sn By this. Having recalled his former lament and petition, the psalmist returns to the confident mood of vv. 1-3. The basis for his confidence may be a divine oracle of deliverance, assuring him that God would intervene and vindicate him. The demonstrative pronoun “this” may refer to such an oracle, which is assumed here, though its contents are not included. See P. C. Craigie, Psalms 1-50 (WBC), 319, 321.

[41:11]  6 tn Or “will.” One may translate the imperfect verbal form as descriptive (present, cf. NIV) or as anticipatory (future, cf. NEB).

[41:11]  7 tn Heb “shout.”

[55:12]  8 tn Or “for.”

[55:12]  9 tn Heb “[who] magnifies against me.” See Pss 35:26; 38:16.

[7:8]  10 tn The singular form is understood as collective.

[7:8]  11 tn Or “rejoice” (KJV, NAB, NASB, NRSV); NCV “don’t laugh at me.”

[7:8]  12 sn Darkness represents judgment; light (also in v. 9) symbolizes deliverance. The Lord is the source of the latter.

[2:10]  13 tn Heb “this is for them in place of their arrogance.”

[2:10]  14 tn Heb “made great [their mouth?] against” (cf. the last phrase of v. 8).

[12:7]  15 tn Heb “the tents” (so NAB, NRSV); NIV “the dwellings.”

[12:7]  16 tn Heb “house,” referring here to the dynastic line. Cf. NLT “the royal line”; CEV “the kingdom.” The same expression is translated “dynasty” in the following verse.
