Context24:41 And while they still could not believe it 2 (because of their joy) and were amazed, 3 he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 4 24:42 So 5 they gave him a piece of broiled fish, 24:43 and he took it and ate it in front of them.
Philippians 4:11-13
Context4:11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content in any circumstance. 4:12 I have experienced times of need and times of abundance. Hebrews 13:5
Context13:5 Your conduct must be free from the love of money and you must be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you and I will never abandon you.” 10
[37:3] 1 tn Heb “tend integrity.” The verb רָעָה (ra’ah, “tend, shepherd”) is probably used here in the sense of “watch over, guard.” The noun אֱמוּנָה (’emunah, “faithfulness, honesty, integrity”) is understood as the direct object of the verb, though it could be taken as an adverbial accusative, “[feed] securely,” if the audience is likened to a flock of sheep.
[24:41] 2 sn They still could not believe it. Is this a continued statement of unbelief? Or is it a rhetorical expression of their amazement? They are being moved to faith, so a rhetorical force is more likely here.
[24:41] 3 sn Amazement is the common response to unusual activity: 1:63; 2:18; 4:22; 7:9; 8:25; 9:43; 11:14; 20:26.
[24:41] 4 sn Do you have anything here to eat? Eating would remove the idea that a phantom was present. Angelic spirits refused a meal in Jdt 13:16 and Tob 12:19, but accepted it in Gen 18:8; 19:3 and Tob 6:6.
[24:42] 5 tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of Jesus’ request for food.
[4:12] 6 tn The words “of contentment” are not in the Greek text, but are implied by Paul’s remarks at the end of v. 11.
[4:13] 7 tn The Greek word translated “all things” is in emphatic position at the beginning of the Greek sentence.
[4:13] 8 tc Although some excellent witnesses lack explicit reference to the one strengthening Paul (so א* A B D* I 33 1739 lat co Cl), the majority of witnesses (א2 D2 [F G] Ψ 075 1881 Ï sy) add Χριστῷ (Cristw) here (thus, “through Christ who strengthens me”). But this kind of reading is patently secondary, and is a predictable variant. Further, the shorter reading is much harder, for it leaves the agent unspecified.
[4:19] 9 tn Or “according to the riches of his glory.” The phrase “of his glory” is treated as an attributive genitive in the translation.
[13:5] 10 sn A quotation from Deut 31:6, 8.
