  Trust the Eternal, when the shadows gather, When joys of daylight seem so like a dream; God the unchanging, pities like a father: Trust on and wait, the daystar yet shall gleam. Trust the Eternal, for the clouds that vanish No more can move the mountains from their base Than sin’s illusive wreaths of mist can banish Light from His throne or loving from His Face. Trust the Eternal, repent in meekness Of that heart’s pride which frowns and will not yield, Then to thy child-heart shall come strength in weakness, And thine immortal life shall be revealed.

Psalms 124:1-3

• [Psa 124:1] Now Israel May Say

  Now Israel may say, and that in truth, If that the Lord had not our right maintained, If that the Lord had not with us remained, When cruel men against us rose to strive, We surely had been swallowed up alive. Yea, when their wrath against us fiercely rose, The swelling tide had o’er us spread its wave, The raging stream had then become our grave, The surging flood, in proudly swelling roll, Most surely then had overwhelmed our soul. Blest be the Lord, who made us not their prey; As from the snare a bird escapeth free, Their net is rent and so escaped are we; Our only help is in God’s holy Name, Who made the earth and all the heavenly frame.

• [Psa 124:2] If God Had Not Been On Our Side

  If God had not been on our side And had not come to aid us, The foes with all their power and pride Would surely have dismayed us; For we, His flock, would have to fear The threat of men both far and near Who rise in might against us. Their furious wrath, did God permit, Would surely have consumed us And as a deep and yawning pit With life and limb entombed us. Like men o’er whom dark waters roll Their wrath would have engulfed our soul And, like a flood, o’erwhelmed us. Blest be the Lord, who foiled their threat That they could not devour us; Our souls, like birds, escaped their net, They could not overpower us. The snare is broken—we are free! Our help is ever, Lord, in Thee, Who madest earth and Heaven.

• [Psa 127:1] Father Of Men, In Whom Are One

  Father of men, in Whom are one All humankind beneath Thy sun, Stablish our work in Thee begun. Except the house be built of Thee, In vain the builder’s toil must be: O strengthen our infirmity. Man lives not for himself alone, In others’ good he finds his own; Life’s worth in fellowship is known. We, friends and comrades on life’s way, Gather within these walls to pray: Bless Thou our fellowship today. O Christ, our Elder Brother, who By serving man God’s will didst do, Help us to serve our brethren, too. Guide us to seek the things above, The base to shun, the pure approve, To live by Thy free law of love. In all our work, in all our play, Be with us, Lord, our Friend, our Stay; Lead onward to the perfect day: Then may we know, earth’s lesson o’er, With comrades missed or gone before, Heav’n’s fellowship for evermore.

  O Father, all creating, Whose wisdom, love, and power First bound two lives together In Eden’s primal hour, Today to these Thy children Thine earliest gifts renew, A home by Thee made happy, A love by Thee kept true. O Savior, Guest most bounteous Of old in Galilee, Vouchsafe today Thy presence With these who call on Thee; Their store of earthly gladness Transform to heavenly wine, And teach them, in the tasting, To know the gift is Thine.   Unless the Lord the house shall build, The weary builders toil in vain; Unless the Lord the city shield, The guards a useless watch maintain. In vain you rise ere morning break, And late your nightly vigils keep, And of the bread of toil partake; God gives to His belovèd sleep. Lo, children are a great reward, A gift from God in very truth; With arrows is his quiver stored Who joys in children of his youth. • [Psa 127:1] We Cannot Build Alone

  We cannot build alone; to rear, great God, to Thee, A house which Thou wilt own, Thou must the builder be. Not by our might, but Thy power, Must dome and tower take upward flight, Must dome and tower take upward flight. Were all the stones that lie unquarried ’neath the sod Piled up against the sky, it were not worthy God. To make this dear, Lord, condescend Thy head to bend and enter here, Thy head to bend and enter here. Let faith here rear to God! Here love erect her thrones!   Behold! the mountain of the Lord In latter days shall rise On mountain tops above the hills, And draw the wondering eyes. To this the joyful nations round, All tribes and tongues, shall flow; Up to the hill of God, they’ll say, And to His house we’ll go. The beam that shines from Zion hill Shall lighten every land; The King Who reigns in Salem’s towers Shall all the world command. Among the nations He shall judge; His judgments truth shall guide; His scepter shall protect the just, And quell the sinner’s pride. No strife shall vex Messiah’s reign Or mar the peaceful years; To plowshares soon they beat their swords To pruning hooks their spears. No longer hosts encountering hosts, Their millions slain deplore; They hang the trumpets in the hall And study war no more. Come then, O house of Jacob, come To worship at His shrine; And, walking in the light of God, With holy beauties shine. In latter days, the Mount of God, His sacred house shall rise Above the mountains and the hills, And strike the wondering eyes. To this the joyful nations round, All Tribes and Tongues shall flow; Up to the house of God they’ll say, To Jacob’s God, we’ll go. To us He’ll point the ways of truth: The sacred Path we’ll tread From Salem and from Zion-Hill His law shall then proceed. Among the nations and the isles, As Judge supreme, He’ll sit: And, vested with unbounded power Will punish or seguit. No strife shall rage, nor angry feuds, Disturb these peaceful years; To plowshares then they’ll beat their swords, To pruning hooks their spears. Then nation shan’t ’gainst nation rise, And slaughtered house deplore: They’ll lay the useless trumpet by, And study war no more. O come ye, then, of Jacob’s house, Our hearts now let us join: And, walking in the light of God, With holy beauties shine. O’er mountain tops, the mount of God In latter days, shall rise Above the summits of the hills, And draw the wondering eyes. To this the joyful nations round, All tribes and tongues shall flow; Up to the mount of God, they say, And to His house we’ll go. The beams that shine from Zion’s hill Shall lighten ev’ry land; The King, who reigns in Salem’s towers Shall the whole world command. Among the nations He shall judge, His judgments truth shall guide; His scepter shall protect the just, And crush the sinner’s pride. No war shall rage, nor hostile strife Disturb those happy years; To plough shares men shall beat their swords, To pruning hooks their spears. No longer hosts, encountering hosts, Shall crowds of slain deplore; They’ll lay the martial trumpet by, And study war no more.

Jeremiah 17:5

• [Jer 17:5] Cursed Is The One Who Trusts In Man

  Cursed is the one who trusts in man, Who leans on him for might. He turns away from God the Lord; His heart rejects what’s right. He’s like a bush out in the waste; Good times will pass him by. His place is parched and desolate, With none to hear his cry. But blessed the man who trusts the Lord; God is his hope and stay. He’s like a tree beside a stream; Its roots drink deep each day. It never fears in summertime; Its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a drought; Its fruit is always seen. Lord, may I never in mankind Place confidence or hope. A fruitless, barren state that brings, With none to help me cope. But may I always trust in You; Your Word will quench my thirst. You’ll give me strength for every trial; I’ll always put You first.
