Psalms 65:5

65:5 You answer our prayers by performing awesome acts of deliverance,

O God, our savior. 1

[65:5]  1 tn Heb “[with] awesome acts in deliverance you answer us, O God of our salvation.”

[65:5]  2 tn Heb “a source of confidence [for] all the ends of the earth.”

[65:5]  3 tc Heb “and [the] distant sea.” The plural adjective is problematic after the singular form “sea.” One could emend יָם (yam, “sea”) to יָמִים (yamim, “seas”), or emend the plural form רְחֹקִים (rÿkhoqim, “far”) to the singular רָחֹק (rakhoq). In this case the final mem (ם) could be treated as dittographic; note the mem on the beginning of the first word in v. 6.

[89:13]  4 sn The Lord’s arm, hand, and right hand all symbolize his activities, especially his exploits in war.

[89:13]  5 tn Heb “is lifted up.” The idiom “the right hand is lifted up” refers to victorious military deeds (see Pss 89:42; 118:16).

[89:14]  6 sn The Lord’s throne symbolizes his kingship.

[89:14]  7 tn Heb “are in front of your face.” The idiom can mean “confront” (Ps 17:13) or “meet, enter the presence of” (Ps 95:2).

[99:4]  8 tn Heb “and strength, a king, justice he loves.” The syntax of the Hebrew text is difficult here. The translation assumes that two affirmations are made about the king, the Lord (see v. 1, and Ps 98:6). The noun עֹז (’oz, “strength”) should probably be revocalized as the adjective עַז (’az, “strong”).

[99:4]  9 tn Heb “you establish fairness.”

[144:8]  10 tn Heb “who [with] their mouth speak falsehood, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.” The reference to the “right hand” is probably a metonymy for an oath. When making an oath, one would raise the hand as a solemn gesture. See Exod 6:8; Num 14:30; Deut 32:40. The figure thus represents the making of false oaths (false promises).

[144:11]  11 tn Heb “from the hand of the sons of foreignness.”

[144:11]  12 tn Heb “who [with] their mouth speak falsehood, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.” See v. 8 where the same expression occurs.
