“God overlooks it;

he does not pay attention;

he never notices.” 2

Psalms 50:21

Psalms 139:1-4

Context
Psalm 139 7

For the music director, a psalm of David.

139:1 O Lord, you examine me 8  and know.

139:2 You know when I sit down and when I get up;

even from far away you understand my motives.

139:3 You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; 9

you are aware of everything I do. 10

139:4 Certainly 11  my tongue does not frame a word

without you, O Lord, being thoroughly aware of it. 12

Job 34:21

Context

34:21 For his eyes are on the ways of an individual,

he observes all a person’s 13  steps.

Jeremiah 9:13-16

Context

9:13 The Lord answered, “This has happened because these people have rejected my laws which I gave them. They have not obeyed me or followed those laws. 14  9:14 Instead they have followed the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts. They have paid allegiance to 15  the gods called Baal, 16  as their fathers 17  taught them to do. 9:15 So then, listen to what I, the Lord God of Israel who rules over all, 18  say. 19  ‘I will make these people eat the bitter food of suffering and drink the poison water of judgment. 20  9:16 I will scatter them among nations that neither they nor their ancestors 21  have known anything about. I will send people chasing after them with swords 22  until I have destroyed them.’” 23

Jeremiah 16:17

Context
16:17 For I see everything they do. Their wicked ways are not hidden from me. Their sin is not hidden away where I cannot see it. 24

Jeremiah 23:24

Context

23:24 “Do you really think anyone can hide himself

where I cannot see him?” the Lord asks. 25

“Do you not know that I am everywhere?” 26

the Lord asks. 27

Ezekiel 8:12

Context

8:12 He said to me, “Do you see, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each in the chamber of his idolatrous images? 28  For they think, ‘The Lord does not see us! The Lord has abandoned the land!’”

Revelation 20:12

Context
20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne. Then 29  books were opened, and another book was opened – the book of life. 30  So 31  the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to their deeds. 32

[10:11]  1 tn Heb “he says in his heart.” See v. 6.

[10:11]  2 tn Heb “God forgets, he hides his face, he never sees.”

[50:21]  3 tn Heb “these things you did and I was silent.” Some interpret the second clause (“and I was silent”) as a rhetorical question expecting a negative answer, “[When you do these things], should I keep silent?” (cf. NEB). See GKC 335 §112.cc.

[50:21]  4 tn The Hebrew infinitive construct (הֱיוֹת, heyot) appears to function like the infinitive absolute here, adding emphasis to the following finite verbal form (אֶהְיֶה, ’ehyeh). See GKC 339-40 §113.a. Some prefer to emend הֱיוֹת (heyot) to the infinitive absolute form הָיוֹ (hayo).

[50:21]  5 tn Or “rebuke” (see v. 8).

[50:21]  6 tn Heb “and I will set in order [my case against you] to your eyes.” The cohortative form expresses the Lord’s resolve to accuse and judge the wicked.

[139:1]  7 sn Psalm 139. The psalmist acknowledges that God, who created him, is aware of his every action and thought. He invites God to examine his motives, for he is confident they are pure.

[139:1]  8 tn The statement is understood as generalizing – the psalmist describes what God typically does.

[139:3]  9 tn Heb “my traveling and my lying down you measure.” The verb זָרָה (zarah, “to measure”) is probably here a denominative from זָרָת (zarat, “a span; a measure”), though some derive it from זָרָה (zarat, “to winnow; to sift”; see BDB 279-80 s.v. זָרָה).

[139:3]  10 tn Heb “all my ways.”

[139:4]  11 tn Or “for.”

[139:4]  12 tn Heb “look, O Lord, you know all of it.”

[34:21]  13 tn Heb “his”; the referent (a person) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[9:13]  14 tn Heb “and they have not walked in it (with “it” referring to “my law”).

[9:14]  15 tn Heb “they have gone/followed after.” See the translator’s note at 2:5 for the idiom.

[9:14]  16 tn Heb “the Baals,” referring either to the pagan gods called “Baals” or the images of Baal (so NLT).

[9:14]  17 tn Or “forefathers,” or “ancestors.” Here the referent could be the immediate parents or, by their example, more distant ancestors.

[9:15]  18 tn Heb “Yahweh of armies, the God of Israel.”

[9:15]  19 tn Heb “Therefore, thus says the Lord…” The person is shifted from third to first to better conform with English style.

[9:15]  20 tn Heb “I will feed this people wormwood and make them drink poison water.” “Wormwood” and “poison water” are not to be understood literally here but are symbolic of judgment and suffering. See, e.g., BDB 542 s.v. לַעֲנָה.

[9:16]  21 tn Heb “fathers.”

[9:16]  22 tn Heb “I will send the sword after them.” The sword here is probably not completely literal but refers to death by violent means, including death by the sword.

[9:16]  23 sn He will destroy them but not completely. See Jer 5:18; 30:11; 46:28.

[16:17]  24 tn Heb “For my eyes are upon all their ways. They are not hidden from before me. And their sin is not hidden away from before my eyes.”

[23:24]  25 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[23:24]  26 tn The words “Don’t you know” are not in the text. They are a way of conveying the idea that the question which reads literally “Do I not fill heaven and earth?” expects a positive answer. They follow the pattern used at the beginning of the previous two questions and continue that thought. The words are supplied in the translation for clarity.

[23:24]  27 tn Heb “Oracle of the Lord.”

[8:12]  28 tn Heb “the room of his images.” The adjective “idolatrous” has been supplied in the translation for clarity.

[20:12]  29 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.

[20:12]  30 tn Grk “another book was opened, which is of life.”

[20:12]  31 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the implied result of the books being opened.

[20:12]  32 tn Grk “from the things written in the books according to their works.”
