[22:25]  1 tn Heb “from with you [is] my praise.”

[22:25]  2 tn Heb “my vows I will fulfill before those who fear him.” When asking the Lord for help, the psalmists would typically promise to praise the Lord publicly if he intervened and delivered them.

[35:18]  3 sn The great assembly is also mentioned in Ps 22:25.

[35:18]  4 tn Heb “among numerous people.”

[40:9]  5 sn The great assembly is also mentioned in Pss 22:25 and 35:18.

[40:9]  6 tn Heb “I proclaim justice in the great assembly.” Though “justice” appears without a pronoun here, the Lord’s just acts are in view (see v. 10). His “justice” (צֶדֶק, tsedeq) is here the deliverance that originates in his justice; he protects and vindicates the one whose cause is just.

[40:9]  7 tn Heb “Look! My lips I do not restrain.”

[40:10]  8 tn Heb “your justice I have not hidden in the midst of my heart.”

[40:10]  9 tn Heb “I have not hidden your loyal love and reliability.”

[89:5]  10 tn As the following context makes clear, the personified “heavens” here stand by metonymy for the angelic beings that surround God’s heavenly throne.

[89:5]  11 tn Heb “in the assembly of the holy ones.” The phrase “holy ones” sometimes refers to God’s people (Ps 34:9) or to their priestly leaders (2 Chr 35:3), but here it refers to God’s heavenly assembly and the angels that surround his throne (see vv. 6-7).

[89:7]  12 tn Heb “feared.”

[89:7]  13 tn Heb “in the great assembly of the holy ones.”

[89:7]  14 tn Or perhaps “feared by.”

[107:32]  15 tn Heb “in the seat of the elders.”

[108:3]  16 tn Or “the peoples.”

[109:30]  17 tn Heb “I will thank the Lord very much with my mouth.”

[109:30]  18 tn Heb “many.”

[149:1]  19 sn Psalm 149. The psalmist calls upon God’s people to praise him because he is just and avenges them.

[149:1]  20 tn Heb “his praise in the assembly of the godly ones.”

[149:1]  21 sn Psalm 149. The psalmist calls upon God’s people to praise him because he is just and avenges them.

[149:1]  22 tn Heb “his praise in the assembly of the godly ones.”

[29:10]  23 tn The noun מַּבּוּל (mabbul, “flood”) appears only here and in Gen 6-11, where it refers to the Noahic flood. Some see a reference to that event here. The presence of the article (perhaps indicating uniqueness) and the switch to the perfect verbal form (which could be taken as describing a past situation) might support this. However, the immediate context indicates that the referent of מַּבּוּל is the “surging waters” mentioned in v. 3. The article indicates waters that are definite in the mind of the speaker and the perfect is probably descriptive in function, like “thunders” in v. 3. However, even though the historical flood is not the primary referent here, there may be a literary allusion involved. The psalmist views the threatening chaotic sea as a contemporary manifestation of the destructive waters of old.

[29:10]  24 tn The prefixed verbal form with vav (ו) consecutive here carries the descriptive function of the preceding perfect.

[29:2]  25 tn Heb “ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name.” The Hebrew term שֵׁם (shem, “name”) refers here to the Lord’s reputation. (The English term “name” is often used the same way.)

[29:2]  26 tn That is, properly dressed for the occasion.

[6:3]  27 tn Heb “my being is very terrified.” The suffixed form of נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, “being”) is often equivalent to a pronoun in poetic texts.

[6:3]  28 tn Heb “and you, Lord, how long?” The suffering psalmist speaks in broken syntax. He addresses God, but then simply cries out with a brief, but poignant, question: How long will this (= his suffering) continue?

[6:4]  29 tn Heb “my being,” or “my life.” The suffixed form of נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh, “being”) is often equivalent to a pronoun in poetic texts.

[6:4]  30 sn Deliver me because of your faithfulness. Though the psalmist is experiencing divine discipline, he realizes that God has made a commitment to him in the past, so he appeals to God’s faithfulness in his request for help.

[20:1]  31 sn Psalm 20. The people pray for the king’s success in battle. When the king declares his assurance that the Lord will answer the people’s prayer, they affirm their confidence in God’s enablement.

[20:1]  32 tn The prefixed verbal forms here and in vv. 1b-5 are interpreted as jussives of prayer (cf. NEB, NIV, NRSV). Another option is to understand them as imperfects, “the Lord will answer,” etc. In this case the people declare their confidence that the Lord will intervene on behalf of the king and extend to him his favor.

[20:1]  33 sn May the Lord answer you. The people address the king as they pray to the Lord.

[20:1]  34 tn Heb “in a day of trouble.”

[20:1]  35 tn Heb “the name of the God of Jacob.” God’s “name” refers metonymically to his very person and to the divine characteristics suggested by his name, in this case “God of Jacob,” which highlights his relationship to Israel.
