Psalms 34:7

34:7 The Lord’s angel camps around

the Lord’s ¹  loyal followers ²  and delivers them. ³ 

Deuteronomy 33:27

33:27 The everlasting God is a refuge,

and underneath you are his eternal arms; ⁴ 

he has driven out enemies before you,

and has said, “Destroy!”

Isaiah 4:5

4:5 Then the Lord will create

John 10:28-29

[34:7]  ³ tn The prefixed verb with vav (ו) consecutive here carries the same generalizing force as the active participle in the first line. See GKC 329 §111.u.

[33:27]  ⁴ tn Heb “and from under, arms of perpetuity.” The words “you” and “his” are supplied in the translation for clarification. Some have perceived this line to be problematic and have offered alternative translations that differ significantly from the present translation: “He spread out the primeval tent; he extended the ancient canopy” (NAB); “He subdues the ancient gods, shatters the forces of old” (NRSV). These are based on alternate meanings or conjectural emendations rather than textual variants in the mss and versions.

[4:5]  ⁵ tn Heb “over all the place, Mount Zion.” Cf. NLT “Jerusalem”; CEV “the whole city.”

[4:5]  ⁶ tn Heb “a cloud by day, and smoke, and brightness of fire, a flame by night.” Though the accents in the Hebrew text suggest otherwise, it might be preferable to take “smoke” with what follows, since one would expect smoke to accompany fire.

[4:5]  ⁷ tn Heb “indeed (or “for”) over all the glory, a canopy.” This may allude to Exod 40:34-35, where a cloud overshadows the meeting tent as it is filled with God’s glory.

[2:5]  ⁸ tn Heb “her”; the referent (Jerusalem) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[10:28]  ⁹ tn Grk “And I give.”

[10:28]  ¹⁰ tn Or “will never die” or “will never be lost.”

[10:28]  ¹¹ tn Or “no one will seize.”
