  Thou Lord of hosts, whose guiding hand Has brought us here before Thy face, Our spirits wait for Thy command, Our silent hearts implore Thy peace. Those spirits lay their noblest powers As offerings on Thy holy shrine. Thine was the strength that nourished ours; The soldiers of the cross are Thine. While watching on our arms at night We saw Thine angels around us move. We heard Thy call, we felt Thy light, And followed, trusting, to Thy love. Send us wherever Thou wilt, O Lord! Through rugged toil and wearying fight. Thy conquering love shall be our sword, And faith in Thee our truest might. Send down Thy constant aid, we pray. Be Thy pure angels with us still.   Great God, we sing Your mighty hand By which supported still we stand; The opening year Your mercy shows, That mercy crowns it ’til its close. By day, by night, at home, abroad, Still are we guarded by our God, By His incessant bounty fed, By His unerring counsel led. With grateful hearts the past we own; The future, all to us unknown, We to Thy guardian care commit, And peaceful leave before Thy feet. In scenes exalted or depressed, You are our joy, and You our rest; Your goodness all our hopes shall raise, Adored through all our changing days. When death shall interrupt our songs And seal in silence mortal tongues, In fairer realms, O God, shall we Your praises sing eternally.

• [Deu 4:29] Is Thy Heart Athirst To Know?

  Is thy heart athirst to know That the King of Heav’n and earth Deigns to dwell with man below, Yea, hath stoop’d to mortal birth? Search the Word with ceaseless care Till thou find this treasure there. With the sages from afar Journey on o’er sea and land, Till thou see the Morning Star O’er thy heart unchanging stand, Then shalt thou behold His face Full of mercy, truth, and grace. For if Christ be born within, Soon that likeness shall appear Which the heart had lost through sin, God’s own image fair and clear, And the soul serene and bright Mirrors back His heavenly light. Jesus, let me seek for nought But that Thou shouldst dwell in me Let this only fill my thought, How I may grow more like Thee, Through this earthly care and strife, Through the calm eternal life. With the wise who know Thee right, Though the world accounts them fools, I will praise Thee day and night; I will order by Thy rules All my life, that it may be Filled with praise and love of Thee.
