he is the great king who rules the whole earth! 3

Daniel 4:25

Context
4:25 You will be driven 4  from human society, 5  and you will live 6  with the wild animals. You will be fed 7  grass like oxen, 8  and you will become damp with the dew of the sky. Seven periods of time will pass by for you, before 9  you understand that the Most High is ruler over human kingdoms and gives them to whomever he wishes.

Daniel 4:34-35

Context

4:34 But at the end of the appointed time 10  I, Nebuchadnezzar, looked up 11  toward heaven, and my sanity returned to me.

I extolled the Most High,

and I praised and glorified the one who lives forever.

For his authority is an everlasting authority,

and his kingdom extends from one generation to the next.

4:35 All the inhabitants of the earth are regarded as nothing. 12

He does as he wishes with the army of heaven

and with those who inhabit the earth.

No one slaps 13  his hand

and says to him, ‘What have you done?’

1:21 far above every rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 1:22 And God 14  put 15  all things under Christ’s 16  feet, 17  and he gave him to the church as head over all things. 18

Philippians 2:9-10

and gave him the name

that is above every name,

2:10 so that at the name of Jesus

every knee will bow

– in heaven and on earth and under the earth –

[47:2]  1 tn Heb “the Lord Most High.” The divine title “Most High” (עֶלְיוֹן, ’elyon) pictures the Lord as the exalted ruler of the universe who vindicates the innocent and judges the wicked.

[47:2]  2 tn Or “awesome.” The Niphal participle נוֹרָא (nora’), when used of God in the psalms, focuses on the effect that his royal splendor and powerful deeds have on those witnessing his acts (Pss 66:3, 5; 68:35; 76:7, 12; 89:7; 96:4; 99:3; 111:9). Here it refers to his capacity to fill his defeated foes with terror and his people with fearful respect.

[47:2]  3 tn Heb “a great king over all the earth.”

[4:25]  4 tn The Aramaic indefinite active plural is used here like the English passive. So also in v. 28, 29,32.

[4:25]  5 tn Aram “from mankind.” So also in v. 32.

[4:25]  6 tn Aram “your dwelling will be.” So also in v. 32.

[4:25]  7 tn Or perhaps “be made to eat.”

[4:25]  8 sn Nebuchadnezzar’s insanity has features that are associated with the mental disorder known as boanthropy, in which the person so afflicted imagines himself to be an ox or a similar animal and behaves accordingly.

[4:25]  9 tn Aram “until.”

[4:34]  10 tn Aram “days.”

[4:34]  11 tn Aram “lifted up my eyes.”

[4:35]  12 tc The present translation reads כְּלָא (kÿla’), with many medieval Hebrew MSS, rather than כְּלָה (kÿlah) of BHS.

[4:35]  13 tn Aram “strikes against.”

[1:22]  14 tn Grk “he”; the referent (God) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:22]  15 tn Grk “subjected.”

[1:22]  16 tn Grk “his”; the referent (Christ) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

[1:22]  17 sn An allusion to Ps 8:6.

[1:22]  18 tn Grk “and he gave him as head over all things to the church.”

[2:1]  19 tn Or “spiritual fellowship” if πνεύματος (pneumato") is an attributive genitive; or “fellowship brought about by the Spirit” if πνεύματος is a genitive of source or production.

[2:1]  20 tn Grk “and any affection and mercy.” The Greek idea, however, is best expressed by “or” in English.

[3:1]  21 tn Grk “brothers.” See note on the phrase “brothers and sisters” in 1:12.
