Psalms 96:11-13

Context

96:11 Let the sky rejoice, and the earth be happy!

Let the sea and everything in it shout!

96:12 Let the fields and everything in them celebrate!

Then let the trees of the forest shout with joy

96:13 before the Lord, for he comes!

For he comes to judge the earth!

He judges the world fairly, 1

and the nations in accordance with his justice. 2

Psalms 98:7-9

Context

98:7 Let the sea and everything in it shout,

along with the world and those who live in it!

98:8 Let the rivers clap their hands!

Let the mountains sing in unison

98:9 before the Lord!

For he comes to judge the earth!

He judges the world fairly, 3

and the nations in a just manner.

Isaiah 35:1-2

Context
The Land and Its People Are Transformed

35:1 Let the desert and dry region be happy; 4

let the wilderness 5  rejoice and bloom like a lily!

35:2 Let it richly bloom; 6

let it rejoice and shout with delight! 7

It is given the grandeur 8  of Lebanon,

the splendor of Carmel and Sharon.

They will see the grandeur of the Lord,

the splendor of our God.

Isaiah 35:10

Context

35:10 those whom the Lord has ransomed will return that way. 9

They will enter Zion with a happy shout.

Unending joy will crown them, 10

happiness and joy will overwhelm 11  them;

grief and suffering will disappear. 12

Isaiah 52:9

Context

52:9 In unison give a joyful shout,

O ruins of Jerusalem!

For the Lord consoles his people;

he protects 13  Jerusalem.

Isaiah 55:12

Context

55:12 Indeed you will go out with joy;

you will be led along in peace;

the mountains and hills will give a joyful shout before you,

and all the trees in the field will clap their hands.

Jeremiah 48:33

Context

48:33 Joy and gladness will disappear

from the fruitful land of Moab. 14

I will stop the flow of wine from the winepresses.

No one will stomp on the grapes there and shout for joy. 15

The shouts there will be shouts of soldiers,

not the shouts of those making wine. 16

[96:13]  1 tn The verbal forms in v. 13 probably describe God’s typical, characteristic behavior, though they may depict in dramatic fashion the outworking of divine judgment or anticipate a future judgment of worldwide proportions, in which case they could be translated “will judge the world.”

[96:13]  2 tn Heb “and the nations with his integrity.”

[98:9]  3 tn The verbal forms in v. 9 probably describe God’s typical, characteristic behavior, though they may depict in dramatic fashion the outworking of divine judgment or anticipate a future judgment of worldwide proportions (“will judge…”).

[35:1]  4 tn The final mem (ם) on the verb יְשֻׂשׂוּם (yÿsusum) is dittographic (note the initial mem on the following noun מִדְבָּר [midbar]). The ambiguous verbal form is translated as a jussive because it is parallel to the jussive form תָגֵל (tagel). The jussive is used rhetorically here, not as a literal command or prayer.

[35:1]  5 tn Or “Arabah” (NASB); NAB, NIV, TEV “desert.”

[35:2]  6 tn The ambiguous verb form תִּפְרַח (tifrakh) is translated as a jussive because it is parallel to the jussive form תָגֵל (tagel).

[35:2]  7 tn Heb “and let it rejoice, yes [with] rejoicing and shouting.” גִּילַת (gilat) may be an archaic feminine nominal form (see GKC 421 §130.b).

[35:2]  8 tn Or “glory” (KJV, NIV, NRSV); also a second time later in this verse.

[35:10]  9 tn Heb “and the redeemed will walk, the ransomed of the Lord will return.”

[35:10]  10 tn Heb “[will be] on their head[s].” “Joy” may be likened here to a crown (cf. 2 Sam 1:10). The statement may also be an ironic twist on the idiom “earth/dust on the head” (cf. 2 Sam 1:2; 13:19; 15:32; Job 2:12), referring to a mourning practice.

[35:10]  11 tn Heb “will overtake” (NIV); NLT “they will be overcome with.”

[35:10]  12 tn Heb “grief and groaning will flee”; KJV “sorrow and sighing shall flee away.”

[52:9]  13 tn Or “redeems.” See the note at 41:14.

[48:33]  14 tn Heb “from the garden land, even from the land of Moab.” Comparison with the parallel passage in Isa 16:10 and the translation of the Greek text here (which has only “the land of Moab”) suggest that the second phrase is appositional to the first.

[48:33]  15 tn Heb “no one will tread [the grapes] with shout of joy.”

[48:33]  16 tn Heb “shouts will not be shouts.” The text has been expanded contextually to explain that the shouts of those treading grapes in winepresses will come to an end (v. 33a-d) and be replaced by the shouts of the soldiers who trample down the vineyards (v. 32e-f). Compare 25:30 and 51:41 for the idea.
