But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.

Then the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus before Pilate.

Though they found no basis for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

The next day (which is after the day of preparation) the chief priests and the Pharisees assembled before Pilate

Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

Then, because it was the day of preparation, so that the bodies should not stay on the crosses on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was an especially important one), the Jewish leaders asked Pilate to have the victims’ legs broken and the bodies taken down.

After this, Joseph of Arimathea, a disciple of Jesus (but secretly, because he feared the Jewish leaders), asked Pilate if he could remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave him permission, so he went and took the body away.
