The woman said to him, “Sir, I see that you are a prophet.

Yet the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands, as the prophet says,

While we remained there for a number of days, a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.

And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Others said, “He is Elijah.” Others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets from the past.”

But if we say, ‘From people – ’” (they feared the crowd, for they all considered John to be truly a prophet).

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High. For you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

And he added, “I tell you the truth, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

while others were saying that Elijah had appeared, and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had risen.

(For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country.)

When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say, “This really is the Prophet!”

If anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, he should acknowledge that what I write to you is the Lord’s command.

A certain one of them, in fact, one of their own prophets, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

And so they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own house.”

They answered, “John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen.”

So they asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not!” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No!”

John said, “I am the voice of one shouting in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord,’ as Isaiah the prophet said.”

So they asked John, “Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

Now when the people saw the miraculous sign that Jesus performed, they began to say to one another, “This is certainly the Prophet who is to come into the world.”

They replied, “You aren’t from Galilee too, are you? Investigate carefully and you will see that no prophet comes from Galilee!”
