What follows is the account of Esau (also known as Edom).

There was no king in Edom at this time; a governor ruled.

It includes the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites,

chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they possessed. This was Esau, the father of the Edomites.

During David’s campaign against Edom, Joab, the commander of the army, while on a mission to bury the dead, killed every male in Edom.

He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s subjects. The Lord protected David wherever he campaigned.

I will exact my vengeance upon Edom by the hand of my people Israel. They will carry out in Edom my anger and rage; they will experience my vengeance, declares the sovereign Lord.’”

So Esau (also known as Edom) lived in the hill country of Seir.

This is the account of Esau, the father of the Edomites, in the hill country of Seir.

These were the sons of Esau (also known as Edom), and these were their chiefs.

Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom; the name of his city was Dinhabah.

They traveled from Kadesh and camped in Mount Hor at the edge of the land of Edom.

Magdiel, Iram. These were the tribal chiefs of Edom.

all the people of Edom, Moab, Ammon;

Jacob sent messengers on ahead to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the region of Edom.

Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the descendants of Seir in the land of Edom.

These were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites:

Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified, trembling will seize the leaders of Moab, and the inhabitants of Canaan will shake.

But Edom said to him, “You will not pass through me, or I will come out against you with the sword.”
