At the designated time Cain brought some of the fruit of the ground for an offering to the Lord.

but with Cain and his offering he was not pleased. So Cain became very angry, and his expression was downcast.

Jacob stayed there that night. Then he sent as a gift to his brother Esau

So the gifts were sent on ahead of him while he spent that night in the camp.

But Abel brought some of the firstborn of his flock – even the fattest of them. And the Lord was pleased with Abel and his offering,

then you must say, ‘They belong to your servant Jacob. They have been sent as a gift to my lord Esau. In fact Jacob himself is behind us.’”

So the men took these gifts, and they took double the money with them, along with Benjamin. Then they hurried down to Egypt and stood before Joseph.

They got their gifts ready for Joseph’s arrival at noon, for they had heard that they were to have a meal there.

When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts they had brought inside, and they bowed down to the ground before him.

You must also say, ‘In fact your servant Jacob is behind us.’” Jacob thought, “I will first appease him by sending a gift ahead of me. After that I will meet him. Perhaps he will accept me.”
